Stepstalk has an A1licence, rides a 650 BMW 47 bhp or whatever the limit is. Has insurance that covers him for other bikes, as long as he holds the relevant licence. Wants to do his big bike test, wants to use my 900 diversion to do it on.

So, if he rides my bike under test conditions, when his licence is the relevant licence to take the test, will he then be insured?

Cheers!

An insurance certificate means precisely what it says. So on the face of it, unless his certificate has exceptions relating to taking tests, then yes, he's covered. I would however get him to phone his insurers to check first. Record the call if possible and ask for email confirmation.

He has read through his policy documents?

Even if BCF gives you the answer that you and he are wanting, he should still check his policy documents because that's much more reliable than asking BCF.

I'm guessing no

mainly on the basis that he hasn't got the relevant licence yet

And there is the important part. He may have the relevant licence to go out on the road accompanied by an examiner, but as far as the wording of the policy goes...

I reckon you could phone the insurance company 3 times and get three different, vague, non-committal answers and a wait while they speak to a "supervisor".

Not forgetting that this cover will be 3rd party only.

Which insurance company is he with?

If he can't be bothered to read his policy documents and doesn't want to phone them, maybe someone on BCF will read the policy documents and post the relevant parts of it.

Strictly speaking yes he would be covered.

He is allowed to ride the higher powered bike while under training or test with a suitably qualified instructor/tester.
In this case he would be licensed to drive but it comes down to his insurance and any clauses on it.

Uh... 125cc and 11kw/~15bhp.

Presumably you meant A2?

The typical wording that I see is "Provided that the person driving holds a license to drive the vehicle".

It doesn't say full.

What Stepstalk will have is a provisional license (as per https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1999/2864/regulation/16/made). If he's 24 (or has held A2 for 2 years) and is showing L plates front and rear, I guarantee that he's good to go. Guarantee has no monetary value, no express or implied warranty is given, void where prohibited.

You could ask your broker, but as Matt says, you're likely to get an equally weaselly answer.

So what it really comes down to is two things.

1 - how likely is it that Stepstalk will potato the bike or somebody else's property during the Mod2, resulting in a potential insurance claim and possible issues?

2 - how likely is it that plod will bother to stop Stepstalk and delve into the insurance whilst on test, riding a bike showing on the MID, wearing his hi-viz, accompanied by an examiner?

Not likely? Then go for it.

Not a required while on test (as opposed to while doing training), although I would wear one to pacify DVSA Derek.

You're handed a piece of paper to tick and sign saying that it's insured. It's on the MID. He can show two certificates of insurance. Do you really think Derek cares that much?

Bodyguard upgraded his A2 to A using his own bike, anyone can do it. Just don't throw any coat-hangers.

Absolutely, just may be good to turn up looking sensible and safe, first impressions and all that.
