Has anyone used the online service here https://www.gov.uk/keep-registration-number ?

I want to take the private plate off that bike and put it on retention. I then want to put my private plate on that bike. It doesn't state what time scales are used, and I don't know if I have a time frame to organise everything and if there will be a 'normal' period.

How does it work with insurance? Do they give you a date that it'll change over from? Ideally I'd like it from the date my insurance expires so they don't have a chance to rape me.

Edit: Why the fuck is an online service only open office hours? What the actual fuck? I know it's the DVLA, but that's fucking special for even them....

So it looks like it has to be done in two steps. Put old plate on retention and age related plate on bike. Time frame unknown.
When the new V5 arrives, put new plate on bike. This is apparently instant.

In the mean time, I've got to guess what the age related plate will be assigned to the bike. I bought the bike with a private plate and the old owner put his plate on since pretty much new. Even the Honda service book has his private plate on.

As of yet, time scales still unknown.

I surrendered a private reg once as it made a car I was selling seem older than it was. The previous owner had put a private
plate on it, I had to write a letter to DVLA saying I was officially surrendering any rights to use that number.
The car got its original number back again. That is what happens most of the time unless the old number was
'bought' by someone it meant something to. Pretty rare for this to happen though. I have to put my wifes reg on retention
myself as she wants a newer car pretty soon, if I do it in the next few days I'll post again to say what was involved.
I get the feeling the online version will be much faster (mon-fri 8am-6pm Rolling Eyes ) than doing this postally, and it removes a DVLA
monkey from the equation as well if you do it yourself. Thumbs Up Perhaps the online method still has to be checked off by a person
because tbh that's the sort of 'efficiency' I have come to expect from Swansea.

I actually used the online service a fortnight ago to transfer the private plate off of my van so that I could sell it. The van that is.

Was very surprised to find that the transfer (off - onto retention) is now instant, once you have paid your 80 ponds that is. It used to take a couple of weeks waiting for the postal application to come back and a visit to a DVLA local office to get your tax disc.

Luckily I still had the old plates in the garage. Stuck them on, call to insurers, who wanted another 15 ponds from me, and all was done.....

Revised V5 turns up in the post a week or so later.

Usually you get the original registration number back, but this is not guaranteed, and it sounds like you don't know what it used to be anyway - so it will be a nice surprise for you😎

Not knowing what the plate will be means I can legit drive with no plate until the new one arrive from eBay, right? Razz

Just did this online with wifes private plate. The car got its original plate back, and Esure did the change back to the original
reg for free. Thumbs Up That's refreshing, not like an insurance company to volunteer to do anything for free but
they did though. Only thing I'm not sure about is the MOT as there's no mention of that at all on the website,
the printout I have matches the old reg, I'm off to where it was done tomorrow to see whether they will print off
a duplicate with the amended registration. Gonna check all the online databases to make sure its all gone through ok.

Update -
Already showing as taxed and MOT'd on the database. That's pretty good, Thumbs Up but the ask MID site is still showing it
as uninsured Thumbs Down to be fair it was the last part of the process that I did so it may take a few hours?

I've printed off a copy of the new cert to keep in the car until the database is up to date.

Update update.
Wasn't showing until late last night but was on the system this morning so it took under a day
to get everything sewn up. When I put it on her car (30th birthday present) I took a visit to the local DVLA place
and queued up for an hour with a ticket system waiting for my number to be called. Have to say DVLA have improved
this system dramatically. The website says the new amended V5 will be with me in up to 3 days Shocked
