Regularly raiding the scrap bin at work has netted me lots of ally bar and sheet, brass cylinders, steel rods and lots of gears.

There's bigger sheets too, but i can't get them home on the bike (without turning it into an airplane..)

Assuming a dag is a "lock of wool matted with dung hanging from the hindquarters of a sheep", then i'm really struggling to see the benefit to me from such a deal. Confused

Not to mention that all my attempts to machine wool so far have ended in disaster.

Seriously, has the owner agreed that you can take the scrap? Most companies sell it so it could be construed as theft.

Just saying it may be worth keeping it quiet.

That brass and bronze looks like a few bobs worth. The bronze will make your little lathe work hard and the brass will drive you bananas with those tiny little razor sharp splinters that are impossible to see but hurt like a mofo.

I'm sure if you were to ask the right person they would let you have a bit of it.

Another issue is that the cnuts who collect the waste from businesses sometimes do a deal where they will shift the rubbish in exchange for the rights to the ferrous & non-ferrous scrap metal.
So if you make their skip light they may send round a caravan full of brothers, cousins and uncles to sort you aht.

Oh yes! Already started! Using one of the ally cylinders to make a swing arm nut cover for the FZ.

Some of the flat bar will probably be used for an angle grinder jig (for cutting box section, bar and sheets) and the brass and the ally sheets are destined to become part of my home made steel desk.

The only thing i'll ever give gyppos is a dirty look. or their details to the police Wink

I always offer to pay something, but am told that scrap isn't really worth a lot these days. Think ii'd have to take at least 20 kilos before they took anything, and even then it still wouldn't be that much.

I'm surprised just how generous some of our customers are too (the brass and gears were from one of them rather than us). I usually start by moseying around their bins and then saying "Sooo, err... is that all scrap then..?" which is usually followed by a "Yeah, why? Do you want some?" which is in turn followed by a "Yes, please!" and we usually conclude with a friendly "Help yourself" and a "Cheers!". Very Happy

We even stock titanium as well, but they're not quite as keen to give offcuts of that away... Sad

I think the one that looks like bronze is actually just a trick of the light though, as in the flesh it all looks like it's definitely brass. Man, you should see their brass scrap bins, 50 gallon drums just full to the brim of cylinder offcuts and swarf!

Never realised that solid brass was that heavy, until i put in the backpack and spent most of the journey home with the front wheel leaving the ground at every opportunity! Very Happy

Anyway, i shall look forward to machining it soon and then experience those splinters you speak of... Shocked

The place i work in use a shed load of brass, the lads in the machine shop keep all the dog ends etc, til christmas an weigh it all in - they normally go away abroad somewhere the proceeds Shocked
