Hi got my big test coming up but only 21 so shall be restricted to the a2 licence, after a bit of advice for what's some decent bikes to look at. Bike will be used mostly weekends for longer trips say 200 miles, but also for the fun roads near me, preferbly something light to. So far the duke 690 and the Yamaha mt 07 have been on my list to go and view. Money's not a problem so any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Honestly, I think you've covered it. Duke or MT-07, why not? Restrict or "restrict" them, ride for 2 years, Firebusa.

Are you looking for reasons to get something worse? I can't think of any.

Test ride few and decide yourself. Otherwise I fancy Duke.

Another vote for CB500.
I'd hazard a guess when it comes to power to weight ratio, a big fuck off restricted bike isn't going to be anywhere near as fun to ride as a 500 that has the Power to Weight ratio that the manufacturer intended.

However Rog's suggestion about keeping the bike after passing and then removing restrictions does have merit.

Personally I still ride a 500 on a full licence, it can do 120 easily (theoretically Whistle) and accelerates like a mofo so I see no need for any MOAR POWA.

Disclaimer: If you're a lanky bastard then don't buy a CB500.

I don't buy the restrict a 90bhp bike for two years. It aint magically going to feel anything special afterwards, once your used of lugging the excess weight around for that time, and all this remove a restrictor and suddenly gain a new bike is largely complete bollocks IMO.

Two years in you'll either love the bike as it is, or want rid regardless of another 40odd bhp.

If it's worn out the chassis bearings or deteriorated in that time from salty daily use, it will feel utterly crap with another 40bhp too!

Kim duke 390, the A2 version they had to test filled with fuel in order to scrape through.
I have a ful A licence and I'm more than happy with mine, unrestricted but only 2hp more than the A2

And remember if your a porker you can offset the effect of the restricter by just losing weight.

The 690 weighs 8.5kg more and has better kit. If going the restricted/unrestricted route you get an extra 60% more power over the 390 when removing the restriction!

Still quite expensive, so for a first 'big bike' I'd go with my standard answer of a cheap SV650 for a bit and see how you go from there.
