You might have seen the thread I put up about help choosing a bike. After careful consideration, I kept an eye out for Deauvilles and similar. I saw this Deauville for £850, picked it up from the very nice guys at Oliver's Motorcycles in Sleaford. 38000 miles, 12 month ticket, and all in all in good nick. I've done 1000 miles on it since picking it up last weekend and it hasn't missed a beat. Very happy with it.

I do have a couple of questions I hope you Deauville owners can help with though!

1) How the hell do the panniers work? The RH one wont lock, and the LH I cant get into! I haven't actually looked at them properly as I haven't had to use them yet, but from the 5 minutes I gave them before giving up I there is a key hole on the back of the bike which I think is for the right pannier, which as far as I can tell doesn't do anything, and one on the left side under the seat for the left one (see pic), which again as far as I can tell doesn't do anything. Then there's a little handle above each pannier which don't seem to do much either! (see pic)

2) The odometer and trip computer over-read mileage. My 50 mile journey to work is showing as taking 70 miles, and I had 320 miles out the tank apparently... The bike was owned by a squaddie before me who took it out to Germany, so I don't know if he had it converted to KM? The speedo is reading in MPH though.

Thoughts gratefully received!

Both panniers are operated by the key hole at the back of the bike, the mechanisms can become very 'sticky' but can be adjusted, There's loads of info on the Deauville forum, it's worth a join.

I don't know about the luggage, but it looks like your odometer is in KM - 50 miles is 80km, 320km is 200 miles. That's a little low for range, but maybe not far out depending upon riding style, road type, etc. - certainly more believable than 320, especially if that was just to low fuel warning.

My guess would be german bike with MPH overlay on the speedo (not an issue, certainly not at what you've paid).

OK, thanks for the tip. I suspect there's something not quite right going on with the lock mechanism though, perhaps a snapped cable. Will take a look when I get the chance.

Regarding the speedo, it's definitely a UK bike as I did HPI check. The speedo unit seems to be a UK speedo as MPH is the major unit. It's weird though because all the past MOTs give the mileage in miles and they tally up with what is on the bike, so obviously nobody told the tester the Odo was in KM.

I'm not too fussed about it, but is there anything I can do to change it back to miles? My only concern is I am probably going to put lots of miles on it, and if it come's to resale I'm going to get less for it as it will show as having done more miles than it has (yes I am that tight!)
