Car is 2002 Ford Mondeo 2.5 automatic. When slowing down from 50-60 mile an hour to a stop or near stop, it occasionally feels like someone's rammed the car from behind.

It's not consistent but annoying. Googling suggests I check the transmission fluid using a dip stick, but there's no dip stick for the gearbox that I can find. Only one for the oil.

Had similar thing in my bmw. Happened to be the transmission oil pan leaking.

Got that replaced and fluid refilled (20 quid/litre!)
At which point shifting 1-2 and 2-1 became even jerkier. Had the transmission adaptation software reset (should always be done with any transmission work) and cured it completely.

Your gearbox will be the 5 speed auto. The 4 speed auto fitted to the 2 litre has a dipstick, yours does not.

According to the Haynes, there is a test plug (like a fluid level plug) built into the middle of the drain plug. Some kind of level tube that sticks out when you undo it. Filler is higher up on the gearbox.

Get the gearbox up to operating temperature and check the level on the test plug. If fluid comes out, fluid level is fine, If not, top it up.
