Did my A license about 10 years back and recently picked up a cheapy Honda PCX for commuting. Had my third crash in 12 years of intermittent riding today but luckily no serious harm has been done.

Today, I was passing a row of stopped cars on the offside at about 20-30mph when one of them decides to pull out right in front of me. Just enough time to grab the brakes and then that awful moment when you know the inevitable is coming...another 2 or 3 metres stopping distance and I reckon I'd have avoided binning it.

Either way, after calling the young lad all the names under the sun he got out of his Polo and I could see his hands were shaking. I was fine but he was really quite shaken up and I ended up calming him down, apologising for losing my shit and telling him that everything was OK.

A scuffed panel to my scoot and a sore leg was all the damage on my end. He lost his wing mirror and had white paint all over the drivers door.

He started rubbing down the side of his car but I explained to him that he'd pulled out in front of me. I offered my phone number and took his and left it at that. I hit a drunk pedestrian who jumped out in front of me about 8 years ago and in spite of my bike being written off, they then started all this shit about suing me for dental damage. I offered to counter sue and never heard from them again.

Anyway, this got me thinking a few things:

1) ABS would probably have averted the collision.

2) Assuming there are no left turns (and no pedestrians suddenly leaping out of the car) do you feel safer riding on the inside of cars?

3) Front and rear helmet cameras would avoid any comeback, assume there are a few stories of people putting them to use legally on here?

ABS doesn't magically reduce your stopping distance, but this is an argument that's probably best not getting into Smile

Passing on the left is normally a bad idea, I do in some places, but that's mainly where there's a bus lane to nip into.

Camera's have helped with insurance claims, but have also gotten people into trouble. Basically don't film yourself doing 100mph wheelies Razz

Pcx has linked brakes

And are bloody good as well

Never ride down inside unless vehicle stopped and turning right

Cameras would be OK as long as you ride to the b9k all the time

The loudest shouter always wins in insurance. I'd never ever accept a 50/50 and wouklld battle to the end. I no longer wear a camera whilst riding as M.C. says, it gets people in to shit. I can't remember the last time I went out and didn't wheelie.

I do however have massive empty exhaust cans. If they don't hear me coming it's about time for them to get off the road.

To prevent collisions? - I would reduce that speed...

i'm with Jefr0 and if its a queue of stopped traffic i will reduce my speed while filtering.

only ever ride on the inside if its safe to do so and only if necessary.

lihp...you do know sound doesnt just travel in one direction dont you Smile loud exhausts certainly help get you noticed.

This argument again. You can hear my bike from the other end of the road with it heading towards you. Stop being pedantic Laughing

Driving into Manchester City Centre. There are lots of bikes that commute, and many with noisy exhausts.

In a modern car, with all the windows closed, and radio at a reasonable volume. I won't hear even a noisy bike till they have already passed me.

It may be possible in an old shitter, but a modern, decent, well sound proofed car. Won't hear you.

By stopped cars, do you mean parked? Or in traffic?

And ABS won't help a lot, especially if someone just pulls out on you. Just down to your braking skills and reactions.

Down south we pay far too much for everything, we can't afford pricey cars.

A queue of traffic. Plenty of room to pass on a bike/scooter but not enough for two rows of cars. At the point he pulled out on me, the lane was widening for a right turn at traffic lights up ahead. Annoyingly, there was also a traffic island on my right so as he pulled out I had nowhere to go.

If he'd been quicker, I'd been going slower or there was no traffic island we could have avoided the collision.

I'll slow down next time.

Yes, definately go slower passed traffic. 20-30mph passed traffic is fast in my opinion. But, you have already realised that, so...
