From the next year, BMW is going to equip their motorcycles with the automatic ECS, as an optional accessory. BMW and others claim, that this system could save up to 2,500 lives on the road per year.

Side note, from 2018, this kind of emergency call system will be a mandatory part of every single car sold in the EU. Motorcycles won't be affected by this regulation and this system will remain optional. These automated systems, as it's claimed, shorten the time of arrival/response of the emergency services by 40-50%.

How does it work?
The control unit evaluates inputs from all the sensors on the motorcycle. In case of a collision, the system activates the mobile phone unit (with GPS) and contacts the BMW call-center. All the talking is done via microphone and speaker on the right handlebar. If there's no response from the rider, he's unconscious, the operator will evaluate the situation and contact the emergency services.
OR you may activate the system by pressing the SOS button on the right handlebar.

Just dropping the motorcycle at low speed and/or when stationary won't activate the system.

How would that work when I'm off road in the Sahara and drop my bike? Would I get an Arabic or Berber speaking operator, asking me what the f i'm going dancing on the Algerian border?

My car came with the full telephony including the concierge service. The people who handle the emergency calls also do the concierge service. So a "sorry I'm cleaning my car" is no problem as long as you only do it once in a blue moon. I imagine that BMW will be using the same call centre.

Seems like pretty clever and potentially very useful (lifesaving) tech.

If you aren't concerned about adding slightly more weight and electronic complexity to your bike for something which you are virtually never going to use, then it will go down well.
BMW owners should love it.

3... 2...

Things that BMW fit have a habit of becoming mandatory.

Then there will be the "Good afternoon sir, is this your motorbike? Do you know how fast you was going? Are I see you have one of those bike SOS systems. Don't worry, we'll just get your GPS locations and speed from them and send you the fines in the post. Have a good day."

There is an absolutely vast amount of data contained within automotive ECUs that would be very useful to law enforcement. Minor traffic offences don't feature in that; it's not feasible. Tracking organised crime groups, providing evidence that serious offenders were in a particular location, terrorism investigation - that's where the focus is.

Manufacturers don't want law enforcement anywhere near their vehicles for a number of reasons. One is that co-operation will elicit the negative response above, and another is that the disclosure of proprietary information (they spend countless millions developing their electronics systems) could lead to leaks of extremely valuable commercial secrets.

Therefore, manufacturers are refusing to engage with investigators and will continue to do so.

Sure, I'm a detective, I have an interest (and some training) in digital forensics, the above info was from a forensic vehicle examiner who I've seen giving a few seminars on the subject. He confirmed that every manufacturer he'd approached had refused to provide any details on how to access data held on various ECUs.

OnStar (on General Motors vehicles) is similar in functionality to the BMW system above - imagine what you could do (in terms of evidence) if you could tap straight in to a suspect's vehicle's GPS, microphone etc? To my knowledge it hasn't happened, for the reasons stated above.

Good on the manufacturers for holding their ground, for now. We've very occasionally heard of bikes being seized and held as "evidence", which seems spurious for dumb bikes, but as data logging gets more common, PACE 19 (3) (a) is practically gagging for it.

Good luck on the DAS. Wink

It may well call the emergency services but since the Tories will have the emergency services devastated to pre-1950s village hospital standards by then you won't be any better off.

For the record, I own three BMWs (drive and ride like I own the feckin road) and I don't want this junk on any of my bikes. Smile

Point of order: which "emergency services"?

I'd rather have them call:

Arrow Fire and rescue.
Arrow stinkwheel
Arrow Ambulance.
Arrow Parapseudomedic.
Arrow Boy Scouts with a tool for getting stones out of a horse's hoof.
Arrow Ghostbusters (1984).
Arrow A priest (voodoo).
Arrow A priest (catholic).
Arrow A halal butcher.
Arrow Harold Shipman. Ghostbusters (2016).
Arrow Police.

In that specific order.

It is common for domesticated animals to be contained behind barbed wire.
For what disgusting reason did you drop the bike? Something take your fancy in the field and you thought some casual erotic-asphyxiation was in order?

Fair play to you Sir. Thumbs Up Smile
