quite often I use an island I go different ways on the island at different times the approach to it has three lanes

https://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb129/andyscooters/rounderbout_zps4ibjgoki.png

on this occasion I wanted to go straight over I have always assumed(lanes not marked) that left lane was left turn right for right and round and middle was for straight over

apparently I am wrong

so what would you lot do on this island Question

If not signposted. Left lane for first and second exit. Centre lane for second exit. Right lane for third exit. Unless stated otherwise on a sign or road markings.

So for the second exit on your roundabout, I'd take the left lane unless it was occupied, then I'd take the centre lane. I would exit into the left lane from either unless it was occupied.

Left lane to go straight on is the safest, but if the lanes are marked, follow the markings!

Lanes have no markings at all

Instructor says to use as a two lane island and ignore lane

TBH although the highway code offers advice, it often comes down to the subtleties of the roundabout itself. There's a 6-exit roundabout up the road from where I work. The locals appear to have an unvoiced agreement which lane to be in for which exit. This only gets mucked up by non-locals genuinely not knowing what to do, or Audis having a go at jumping a queue by using the wrong lane.

In this case 3 lanes on and 1 lane off is an odd arrangement so it hints that the road aren't "equal" so to speak, and there's an implied expectation that certain lanes go certain ways.

Can you link on Google maps?

Anyone that knows the Harlow area, will know this roundabout well.
It's amazing there are not collisions there on an hourly basis, I've even seen the police use the left lane for A414 use.

The vast majority of traffic on this roundabout is for the A414 and people going eastbound on the A414 will stay on the A414 and use both lanes on the roundabout, with complete disregard to anyone else. I use the right lane, and turn into the left lane on exit whenever possible, but have often had people on the left lane, enter the A414 infront of me onto the right lane, forcing me round the roundabout again.

It's an awful roundabout to navigate on a bike, as people also tend not to indicate, as they just assume everyone knows they are A414 users.

I had a similar experience on my way home today, coming off the M1 on this roundabout.

Clearly marked, lane 1 and 2 are for M1 southbound. Lane 3 is for the A650 (ie the only lane staying on the roundabout). I was in Lane 3, which then becomes lane 1 straight away after the corner. Luckily my spider senses tingled and I managed to avoid the daft cow in a corsa who was simply too important to read these markings as she turned right from lane 2.

Edit: Just noticed that if you move the viewpoint by about ten feet, one of the lanes disappears. Don't be fooled, they only changed it a few months ago and must have only updated half the pictures.
