Lawn Mower Exhaust

Just in the process of getting an old (scabby) mower running an its loud as funk, the exhaust consists of a 2" pipe...thats it no baffles etc

I have seen someone made something out of a bit of hose an tin can

could/ would that cause damage to the engine if I were to use something similar...valves etc?

I dont think any type of exhaust would affect the lawnmower. They are generally low compression side valve engines (assuming its a 4t?). All Id say is keep the gas flow rate roughly the same as the old exhaust as you dont want to restrict performance.

I think the fuelling would affect the engine more. You could get a "color" tune spark plug and make sure it's running bang on

Tin can with a rubber hose pipe for a header? That dude on youtube has been smoking some funny shit IMO!

The last exhaust I made with my dad for a Mower engine, was either a Briggs or a Suffolk motor, we used an old breather assembly from a car engine. Basically it was a small steel can full of wire wool with a similar diameter to the threaded stub that's goes into the exhaust port on the engine. We brazed the two bits together and it made a nice silencer.

I would otherwise recommend using some steel gas pipe and threaded fittings to make up a simple header pipe and silencer. You could use almost anything for a silencer on such an engine, but I you found an old Moped box shape silencer or even a 2stroke end can that would work as well as anything else once you make up some fittings and maybe a bracket to hold it to one of the cylinder head bolts or an unused threaded boss on the engine block.
