Hi, may be a bit short notice for some, but I'm going to Snowdonia on Good Friday, stopping the night, then coming back.

Anyone wanna come with? I was going to go with a mate but he can't get the days off, so I am probably going to end up on my own.

The rough plan is to head over, ride around a bit, then not wild camp at night, because that's illegal or something. Then maybe find something in the morning to do or just ride around a bit, but I need to be back in Warwick again by the evening.

That is as far as the plan has got actually, I was just gonna wing it and hope for the best. Thumbs Up

Bring disposable barbecue inside after you have used it to cook your food Thumbs Up

close the mummy bit up with the drawstring, if it doesn't have one then it is a 2 season sleeping bag and you will probably want your leathers on top to add some weight to trap the warmth. sleeping mats can help insulate as well depending what one. set tent on dry ground.

I was looking at Snowdonia actually for the Good Friday weekend, but at 5 degrees that looks potentially pretty miserable for an all day binge Crying or Very sad

You're just a bunch of big girls blouses. Laughing

I was thinking of knocking around in the north of Snowdonia, all planning will be done tomorrow night really. I'm not really sure what's out there, it's a bit spur of the moment, I was told a few days ago we had the Friday and Monday off so I started thinking about going somewhere.

I might head over to porthmadog, depending on distance, the last time I went on holiday with my family was there, see if I recognise anything seven years later!

I hadn't thought about provisions yet, I was thinking about how to bring a stove to make tea though, which counts, I would guess?

Wild camping is only illegal (trespass is a civil offence rather than criminal) if you bother anyone.

It's not cold, stop complaining. Razz

Get yourself a thermarest sleeping mat; it's really uncomfortable trying to sleep without a mat and thermarest ones don't get cold like standard inflatable airbeds do.

Build a fuckin' massive bonfire that'll still be going when you wake up the next day. Thumbs Up

Provisions? Don't forget some toilet roll. Laughing

Am planning some wild camping over the bank holiday fri/mon.
It's either going to be Snowdon or Scotland, not sure which yet.
Have spent many a night on Snowdon, easy as, Beddgelert is nice down the valley in season but you may not find much open this time of year?
I wouldn't recommend any open fires though, lots of pete.. Don't wanna be 'that guy' that burnt down Snowdonia...

Watertight tent, 4 season sleeping bag, thermals, stove and some good company any you'll do fine.

Spent a few nights on there at -7 a couple of years ago.
Awesome place to start out wild camping, can camp in peace only an hour or so from the car so if the going gets tough you can always bail easily Very Happy

Scotland, not so much, can be as much a day or so trek with kit from a road :-\ But thats half the attraction I guess!

I could tell you the location of a couple of mountain bothies in North Wales that it is absolutely forbidden to take motorcycles up to.

Here's one of them near Bala. It's about a mile or so to walk in from the nearest road. Is very small.

Lake Vyrnwy is a good ride (near Bala). Come over from the Dinas Mawddwy way. Some great small mountain roads.

Was up there the other week. Road to Llanberis from Betws y Coed is pretty epic. Sure a lot of people can vouch for it. First time on a bike and loved it.

Dinorwig slate quarries are a good for views\walk. Feck the visitors center just find the road just past Llanberis that takes you to the top. If you're into a spot of climbing or not, it's worth it for the atmosphere.

don't take a tent, take a hammock. smaller and lighter and i think more comfortable. no cold hard ground beneath you.

Tarp above to keep the rain off. stick your thermorest inside and get a good down sleeping bag. wear your thermals. hammock zips up all the way over you.

you can even get a down "under blanket" type thing which sits like a loose sack under the hammock and adds excellent insulation.

That'd be good, always nice to meet other forummers. Thumbs Up

I've been thinking, I've never been camping on my own before so I probably won't wild camp, just in case stuff goes wrong and I'm in the middle of nowhere. Just cough up a tenner and stop somewhere official.

I'll probably just bring some layers with me, spare socks in case the inevitable rain gets past the boots and carrier bags, water, paracetamol and a map. Then my £1 roll mat, £16 tent, the battered old sleeping bag I've had since I was ten and with the scouts and a couple of blankets, using my clothes for a pillow. Nailed it.

Then some beer and a stove for making tea in the other saddle bag. Thumbs Up

We stayed in Tremadog here: https://www.ericjones-tremadog.co.uk/ on the BCF Wales trip. It's just down the road from Porthmadog too.

The place has a barn you can stay in, so you can leave you tent at home. It's pretty basic to say the least and there's no heating, so you'll still need a sleeping bag but it is dirt cheap. Can't remember how much exactly but, literally a few quid per night.

You'll have to ring up and book beforehand though.

There's also a toilet block on site and a cafe serving hot food and drinks, which you'll probably be extra grateful of at this time of year Thumbs Up

The bloke who owns/runs it is quite an established mounaineer. In fact this is him in his younger days:

Wow, looks perfect. Thumbs Up

I'm a bit nervous going on my own but I did do a week in Cornwall on my own, so I'm not sure why I'm panicking, maybe it's the nutty welsh-folk Laughing

I'll ring up tomorrow and check what's what, I may still camp but not sure now for prices like £7.50 to stop in a bed, you'd be a bit daft not to really.

It'll no doubt be a little warmer, possibly drier and minus the tent carrying/putting up hassle. Well worth it imo Thumbs Up

I'd join you tbh as I'm less than an hour away from N. Wales but, my bike's dead and it'll be at least a month before I get a new one sorted. Some fantastic roads and scenery around there.

Good luck and enjoy. Thumbs Up

Well, I went on Good Friday, but... not on the bike.

I went down the pub on Wednesday and just mentioned my plan, next thing I know he's coming with me. This, gave me Thursday to put my road wheels and some front pads on the Jimny and give it a quick once over in the half hour after work between me finishing and the front desk locking the workshop. So, in a semblance of order.

https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/Snowdon%2025-03-2016/IMG-20160326-WA0008_zps3rdcdotd.jpg

Just rolled up through a village somewhere off the A5.

We drove up to Snowdon, saw these:

Then we walked up into the mountains.

It is up in the National Park I realised why people tell you not to piss into the wind, I soaked my jeans entirely. Laughing

https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/Snowdon%2025-03-2016/IMG-20160326-WA0002_zpsvspkpxya.jpg

My mate, is unfortunately, one of those selfie sorts so we had to do that while we were there.

https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/Snowdon%2025-03-2016/IMG-20160326-WA0001_zpsrnmir5gy.jpg

Later, we found Eric Jones' Cafe, signed in or whatever, I left my mate to do that while I had a nose around. As events transpire, I should have took charge, he'd told Mr. Jones that we were camping.... We had no tent so Jenny the Jimny became a mobile home. We went to Porthmadog, got some food from Spooners, then beer from Tesco's and made up camp in the car, by this I mean we put our sleeping bags on and played a quiz game on his phone all night and drank in the car.

https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/Snowdon%2025-03-2016/DSC_0282_zpsmyvp6aa1.jpg

The next morning we woke up at about half six, and set off to the beach for about quarter to seven.

https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/Snowdon%2025-03-2016/DSC_0283_zpsg5glmmun.jpg

https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/Snowdon%2025-03-2016/IMG-20160326-WA0009_zpsw1ob8okx.jpg

https://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag134/Fladdem/Snowdon%2025-03-2016/IMG-20160326-WA0000_zpsiaoyjkta.jpg

We decided that Bullet by RATM was suitable to blast out while driving through little Welsh villages at early in the morning, that pleased a few locals. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, it was a good little adventure, but it would be nicer to have stayed a bit longer and done a bit more and been on the bike, apart from Saturday morning was tipping it down and very blustery.

^^^Nice post Thumbs Up

Shame you didn't get there on the bike though. Then again, seeing as your mate screwed up the booking of the barn, it's probably just as well. Trying to sleep on a bike isn't very comfortable.

It'd be good to get a few BCFers together aging for another Snowdonia/Wales weekend in the summer. Although I believe summer only lasts for fifteen minutes a year in North Wales. Mr. Green
