Is this the only vehicle in the world with a gauge that registers with the ignition off/keys out? I'm not too convinced on it anyway as I'm pretty certain it went from Full/Full/Full then suddenly to 2/3rds while out and about. It's a 2008 ES7 or 8 disc brake model

Faulty ignition switch and/or short circuit to the gauge, as it is a voltmeter after all. Thinking

You could check draw at the battery with the ignition switch OFF. Thumbs Up

Disconnect the battery, if it still does the same thing, then it's not broken, it's a feature. Razz

The last thing that could cause this, would be sticking needle of the gauge. That would be due to moisture in the housing of the gauge. But still, it shouldn't show a thing when there's no power.

Intermeresting you say that. It's an ex training school bike so there is the slightest of war wounds/holes at the front of the housing

The sticking needle only applies, if you've got a analogue gauge, of course. I'm not sure if it wasn't equipped with a LED or LCD kind of gauge.

the fuel gauge works with the ignition off. its for a rough idea only, thats why you have a reserve tap.

The fuel gauge keeps its position with the ignition off. I think this is usual with real needle-type gauges (rather than nasty fake LCD ones)? Certainly I've driven cars that did that before. It's not powered when the ignition's off, so when you fill up the needle doesn't move until you turn it back on.

Those divisions on the scale aren't thirds, they're (roughly) quarters, not counting reserve. From full to three-quarters the needle stays jammed up at the 'full' end. So having it suddenly drop down to the first mark (half) having not moved at all before that is usual. (The slop in the needle from accelerating/braking or uphill/downhill is about a whole division in any case.)
