So after a lifetime of waiting, I finally got my full big boy licence at the end of last year. I'm also finally in a position to buy my bike, and am hopefully putting a deposit down on a brand new ER6N in the coming days.

First things first; I know, I'll probably drop it and should buy an old bike. However, I can get the ER6N on a very, very good finance deal and I'd enjoy having a new bike purely from a warranty standpoint; as it stands, I know far more about cars than I do bikes, and I'd hate to spend £1500 on something 'ok' only for it to break on me within a month.

Secondly, I did my course and test on an ER6N. I enjoyed riding it, it feels familiar and I think, for now at least, it'll be more than enough for me.

I can see what people mean about the wind buffeting versus the ER6F, but I don't expect to be doing many motorway miles on the bike or any big trips - so I'm hoping that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Truth be told, I haven't ridden the F, but I quite like the style of the naked bike.

Now I've read a fair bike and people don't seem to be overly excited about the ER6N. Compared to other bikes, it probably 'is' a little sluggish, it probably 'is' quite average, but for the price (and finance deal) of both the bike and the insurance, I'm struggling to find anything else that will make me smile for my first couple of years on two wheels.

I took a Triumph Street Triple 675 RX out the other day and it was absolutely fantastic. But, for the cost of the finance deal I was offered, I could own the ER6N outright for the exact same price over the same time scale, where I'd otherwise have to hand the keys to the Triumph back and own nothing.

I'd love a ZX6R, or something similar, but I cannot justify the insurance costs and, to be honest, I think I'll quite enjoy finding my feet on an upright bike.

Long and short, I just want your opinions on the bike. I'm sure your S1000RR is a million times better...but I'm a 26 year old bloke looking for something to put a smile on my face over a couple of summers that hopefully won't throw me in to a ditch or encourage me to ride (too much) like a complete tool.

Are there any genuine reasons as to why I shouldn't call the dealer in the next few days to give them my deposit?

Cheers!

Sounds like you've already made up your mind...

If you've got your heart set on an ER6N, why not buy a used one? I'm sure a used one is still cheaper than your "very, very good finance deal". Buy used from a Kawasaki dealer if you're that worried.

I have no real opinion about that later particular bike. But with the difficulty of getting test rides with a new licence, there is a lot to be said for just getting a bike you know you are comfortable with.

At 26 I passed my test and purchased a brand new middleweight bike too. I didn't drop it and don't regret anything.

That said, if I were doing it all again now and looking for a naked bike, the MT-07, not the ER6 would be at the top of my list.

I'm fairly certain you're right. The only thing that's putting me off are the fairly numerous posts I've seen of people writing it off.

I saw a poll somewhere asking which to go for; ER6N, ER6F or "Meh - get something else." The F got about 50%, the N only got about 12%, and 'anything else' got the rest (38% or so).

I see why people like the F, but for me I prefer the looks of the N and I don't think I'll miss the fairing too much with the kind of riding I'll be doing.

I was mainly wondering what those who would fall in with the "buy anything else" crowd would recommend. As far as price, finance deals and low(ish) insurance go, I just can't seem to find anything else that I either a) like or b) can afford, and I want to know if there are any real reasons as to why it's a bad bike, or if it really is just a bit average and most people want something a bit more exciting.

I haven't much experience on the ER 6N but, spent a day on one riding through towns and some NSL roads only, so no motorway experience on one.

I really enjoyed the bike and have too just ordered one, except I went for the faired version. Partly due to looks but, faired bikes do tend to make a difference when it comes to being buffered by the wind but, not hugely ime. They also generally cost more if you drop them. So it's a case of pros and cons really and what you'll be using it for.

As I said, I've not ridden one on the motorway yet but, never experienced any problem doing 60mph on NSLs with the naked.

Thanks mate - your name has rather reassured me Laughing

In all seriousness, I have seen a few of the MT07s buzzing about, and a chap rocked up on one while I was getting ready to take the Triumph out for a test ride. They do look really, really smart!

But again, the finance on the Kawasaki is just too good to pass up (currently 0% hire purchase with only £99 deposit on ALL bikes 800cc or less).

I dont think there's anything wrong with an ER6, it's just fashionable for people to not like them it seems. I'd have one over an XJ6 or GSR750 etc.

But you said you like and want a sports bike. It might seem as against my normal advice, but I'd say go and test ride one. I don't see how anyone that likes the look of sports bikes or thinks they are the best bikes to own, will be happy with anything else?

I was 22 when I had a ZX6R, and the only salty point was insurance. About 1200quid first year and that was 15years ago. I don't regret my decision at all, and Ive got sports bikes out of my system now, so why buy something as a halfway house or a load of disappointment potentially,if you can get what you really want instead.

In all honesty, I actually sat on a sports bike shortly after getting my licence and, for the first time ever, could actually imagine what it would be like to ride one; and I didn't think I'd like it at all! I didn't think I'd be as stable and confident as I'd like to be on one.

I enjoyed learning on the Kawasaki and I think, as a first proper bike to find my feet and build my confidence, I'll really enjoy it more than I would jumping on a sports bike.

If I get bored, I can pay the ER6 off early and swap it for something a little more 'exciting' once my insurance has dropped Very Happy

it will be sporty enough for you for the next 3-4 years, myself went for the f, but then I like the comfort in the winter on less of an icy blast. I've now gone onto a Triumph Trophy SE again for comfort.

It's your money and you like the bike and it's offer. Thumbs Up

Got to be worth trying a few bikes though before signing on the line, just in case.

Yes. You could call them today.

Actually, you could pay cash or bank transfer for a used bike and be riding it now.

I tried a load of 600's including the ER6n before deciding on an XJ which frankly was my first choice. ER6 was a fine bike to ride though the engine has a really good rep and they get raced as well. You like it, you buy it.

I dont really see the point of the MT-07 unless you have to ride a restricted bike. I think if someone is looking at the 07 they may as well push the boat out a bit more financially and get the MT-09.

Picked her up today! Just 3 miles on the clock when I rolled her out of the showroom. Had a fantastic day riding about and getting used to it.

Very happy!

I've gone for the white version too (matches my leathers) Mr. Green Went for the faired verion myself though.

Can't wait for it to be delivered. I keep drooling over pictures of it at the moment.

Nice bike. The wife has an older model ER6N and loves it.

edit-

Is that a private plate because shouldn't it be a 16 number?

How long until yours comes?! It'll be well worth the wait!

Thank you! And yep, it's a private plate Wink I bought it a few months ago hoping to sell it on, but I've had no real interest in it yet so I'm keeping hold of it for a bit.

Looked a bit nicer on our demo car though...
