Entries close 6th of June.

I'm in now, with Mrs Bamt on the back. We did the Welsh one last weekend, which was a great weekend away. I'm hoping that the logistics will work out so that we don't have far to travel between home and the start/finish controls and can sleep in our own bed for this one. I know there is a start-only 25 miles from here, so it sounds like a go-er.

The pack arrived this morning, got a route roughed out already. The closest start control is about 10 miles away. Looking forward to this Thumbs Up

Someone clear something up for me, please...

Mileage—it says at the top of the control matrix that the mileages shown must be accepted as correct for the purpose of the rally; we also have to record our mileage at each control, on our control card. Does this mean that, when I plan the route, I need to make sure I ride the exact number of miles between controls as shown on the matrix?

For example, if I travel between controls 26 and 10, I need to plan a route that takes me exactly 30 miles? Does it matter if some are under or over, so long as they even out at the end?

What I'm trying to get at is if I managed to travel between two controls in, say, 32 miles and record is as such on my card, will they turn around and say "Hold up, there should only be 30 miles between these controls," and disqualify me, even if my total mileage is still within the limits?

As I understand it, it is just the "official" mileage that you log, your bike's odometer doesn't matter

So, if the official mileage between your start and first control is 25 miles, and 2nd and 3rd is 40 miles, you'd log 25 miles, 40 miles and running total of 65, even if you actually rode (say) 23 and 47. The route you ride is a free route - so you may take a direct country-lane-and-dirt-track for minimum miles, or jump on the motorway for higher speed and more miles. The organisers don't care, as long as it is legal and you only go between controls with an official mileage between them.

Got it, cheers!

Realistically speaking, though, if I did take a route that was longer that the official mileage (or I take a wrong turn), it's probably going to take me longer to ride it, so it's in my best interest to aim for something similar so that I don't run out of time, I guess.

Looking forward to this. Fingers crossed the sun comes out, though...

What controls are people planning to use?

A direct route over little country lanes will probably take longer due to having to navigate carefully and ride relatively slowly compared to a fast A road route. But it all depends. In Wales we did a mix, depending on the area, how well I knew it (I know a lot of little roads there from cycling), and how desperate we were to get to somewhere for food etc.

We're starting at Basingstoke, then doing a clockwise loop west of there.

I thought of heading out that way but I'll be going anticlockwise from Harlow.

We did think of heading out your way, but then there was control 5 which is the only way in and out of your side (before I realised that you aren't disqualified for using a control twice on the daytime) so that would mean a linear ride. As Mrs Bamt won't be up for much more mileage than silver/gold I didn't want to finish miles from home. This way we also sleep in our own bed afterwards, which is always nicer than a hotel room for a decent rest.

I was under the impression that you can only use a control twice if it's your start/finish control? I'd presumed you could still only visit controls once, otherwise. In any case, I'm avoiding using a control twice purely for the sake of visiting places I don't normally go, though I will be staring and finishing at Harlow, I think.

What do you plan a route on? Google Maps is shit—I can't even add enough waypoints to include all the controls, let alone specify a route that I actually want to ride...

Anyone know of anything better?

We got back home about an hour ago with a daytime gold in the bag. A good day out, the changes I've made to the Pan since the Welsh rally meant Mrs Bamt was happy and comfy (or as comfy as you can be after nearly 300 miles on the back of a bike).

We were lucky with the weather, a few minutes of rain whilst riding (which the Pan nicely deflected so we didn't actually get wet) and a brief shower when we were waiting to start (so under the gazebo at the control). Otherwise dry all day, and didn't need to dig waterproofs out.

Thanks to all those controllers who spent (or are still spending) time sitting in car parks to let us have fun.

Definitely a different vibe to the Welsh variant, where there is a single start/finish control so it feels like a mass event with hundreds present. At this one there were 6 bikes at our start, and generally 3 or 4 at each control - so it never felt like a big affair. Good fun nonetheless.

Not really going to help their reputation is it. Publicly arrange to loan someone one of their bikes to do the rally with and then wander off as if nothing happened. I suspect you'd receive the same if you bought one of their bikes.

Not a very good advert is it.

Isn't the Honley dealer in Felixstowe closer to you?

Well that was a disappointment Sad , went to both dealers and neither had the new Honley in stock.
One dealer was to busy to speak to me ???

However it wasn`t all bad as I did get to see the new Mash 400.
Seemed like a decent bike for what it was Thumbs Up

The Retrostar 250 ? Yes - I own one myself, which I occasionally greenlane etc. Done about 5000 miles now on it. Had it for about 2 years now.
Only changes I have done are TCK 80 tyres, and rubber/better grips.
