Hello everybody,

After completing my CBT today, I am looking to purchase a moped, jacket and helmet. Could anybody give me some advice on choosing these items?

Should I go full or open face helmet? Leather or textile jacket? Super cheap eBay bike, or brand new shop brought one?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

Very Happy

I would always advise a full face helmet.
If it comes to the point of needing protection, the face part is the bit I'd want to protect the most.

Clothing for a moped would be textile over leather, look for clothing with armour on the knees and elbows and find a decent pair of boots that will keep you dry and have decent ankle protection.

As for the bike, it really depends on how long you are planning on keeping it.

How long are you planning on keeping it?

Thanks for replying,

I'd be thinking of keeping the bike until I can progress to a 125cc bike (about 8 months time).

Then almost certainly buy as good a bike for a cheap as you can afford.
You should look at Japanese only, if only for the fact that it will last you the 8 months with no need to even look 'under the hood', as long as it's had a recent service, and you'll get back what you paid for it.
Go Chinese and you'll play a lottery, some are great, some are duds, but Jap bikes just tend to keep their value. There is a reason behind that, no matter how many times you'll be told that they are all made in china anyhow and they are all the same, blah, blah, blah.

Honda PCX are popular and well worth a look at.

Oh and buy a decent helmet, try not to scrimp on that.

If you only need it for eight months go second-hand. Depreciation on new machines is insane. Avoid adverts that appear to have been texted by a brain-dead semi-literate moron. Don't touch anything that's been modified or customised, it'll be a piece of junk.
Textiles are more practical than leathers, waterproof for a start, and usually cheaper.
Helmet wise, definitely full face, preferably with pinlock visor. Mine's got an internal flip down sun visor that I now couldn't imagine being without.

Thank you very much for replying. I will keep an eye out for a: textile jacket, preferably japanese built bike and a decent helmet.

Whatever lid you want. Textiles over leather if you plan to be riding all weather. Cheapest ped you can find with over 8 months MOT whatever brand, view it as disposable.

Best advice is to go into one of the large motorcycle shops and try on equipment.
Each brand has different sizing and you want it fitting right.

Most places will have discount or clearance sections which can save you a bunch.
Failing that showroom the equipment, it means trying it on in one store then buying it from another or online which is cheaper.

Second hand moped than second hand 125. Because you will sell both at some point and do not want to loose too much money.

Go in a gear shop and get a full face helmet that fits you well and make sure it has pinlock visor.

Get nice textile waterproof gore-tex jacket. The best gore-tex is laminated means the gore-tex is glued to the outer fabric - this way prevents the outer fabric sucking a lot of water and making your jacket very heavy when rains.

Like this one: https://www.motoin.de/Clothing/Jackets/Textilejackets/Scott-DISTINCT-1-GT-jacket::23498.html?refID=33&utm_source=olaedi_UK&utm_medium=export&language=en&country=GB

Or any Rukka if money are no problem.
