Hi, I'm a new biker and on my first big bike. I've not spent loads on a bike yet to get used to bikes in general and mechanically. I've been doing jobs myself and now have to fix an oil leak which i believe to be from the cam chain tensioner.

My question is regarding torque settings, it seems far more relavent to use a torque wrench for anything on a motorbike, is this really the case? when i used to work on cars i used to just tighten bolts up and that was it, DIY i might add.

Do i have to use a torque wrench to replace the cam chain tensioner?

you know there is a tendency (especially if your a big bloke) to make everything "king" tight and this is not always a cool thing.

its all too easy to stretch bolts or sheer them off.

was working a on a friends kart and he was doing everything king tight and managed to sheer a bolt off from the clutch plate.
being a stamped Rotax part = best part of £100.

Same bloke managed to sheer off one of the engine mounting bolts.
its a kart (bike in this case) not the QE2 bridge.

if you use a torque wrench then at least you have peace of mind that it is tight enough without damaging anything.

If you get a workshop or service manual for the bike it will have all of the relevant torque settings and tell you if things need threadlock or greased threads. I use a torque wrench all the time on the bike.

Thanks for the replies and advice. i know it makes sense there just bloody expensive, spending out hand over fist at the minute after doing the license, bike and gear in one hit lol. oh well i best get shopping then, again i know its a case of once i have it it will save in the long run but its just all at once, just done the chain and sprocket which cost me £60 for the chain kit on top of the price of the chain and sprocket.

Until you heave on your randomly calibrated wrench on a bolt that's not as dry or as greased as it's meant to be, or pre-stretched, or going into a corroded hole, and PTANG, off with its head.

Use it as an accompaniment to mechanical sympathy rather than a replacement.

I should get one too... My idea of a torque wrench is a wrench with a length of scaffold on the end of it to give extra pressure :p

And as a bigger bloke, yeah i had a tendency to tighten things probably more than they should be...
