Afternoon all

It's been a while since I've been on here, but have been happily whizzing about on my Kwak Z1000 for the last year or so, but Im starting to get the need a change itch.

Anyone had any experience of Gixxer 750s? I've read nothing but good reviews on them. Anyone any comments on build quality and longevity (seeing as I use my bikes all year round), any common issues?

I might have a potential swap on the cards, obviously pending inspection of both bikes by both parties - my 59 plate Z1000 for an 07 plate 750 K7.

Mine's on 24,500 miles, had no real service history until I dug around and figured it all out from the previous owner and garages he'd visited. Likewise, this K7 has suffered the same fate of the previous owner misplacing the service history - so I'm sort of concerned, but not too much.

It's a 2007. 22k miles and no service history apparently, as mentioned above.

Pictures make it look tidy and well looked after, but I've not got them hosted anywhere to share.

As in, the kind of matt looking finish faring? I must admit, I wasn't sure but have seen a few that looked similar...perhaps I'll investigate this a bit further.

Oh yeah....I see what you mean. Hmm. Neutral

Could this have been a factory custom paint job? Only asking, as a mate has just bought a 2014 Street Triple that looks like nothing I've seen (from a Triumph dealer, so reasonable to assume it's legitimate).

Or do Suzuki not do that kind of thing?

All the standard colours listed there.

Indeed, that is a little dodge.

Me, I'd not be too worried but I'd be going over it with an eagle eye, checking around the headstock, stoppers on the yokes, scratching/scuffs behind heel plates, bent lugs and badly/mis-fitted plastics, odd gaps between plastics on one side than the other etc.

Don't buy that! Someone has replaced the rear brake reservoir with an AutoGlym bottle.

I hear You Paddy.

I'd be less suspicious now though if it had service history. The fact that is missing and it's appearing to be non-standard paint job is a concern if I'm being honest, especially as I know my bike is 100% straight and genuine.

He's suggested he can meet up at my place, but I think I'd leaning towards meeting somewhere neutral at the moment...

Not the same. Triumph will paint any bike any colour if purchased by an employee, which means there are one or two weird and wonderful colour combinations floating about.

Ah, I see.

Going off this idea little now! Laughing Rolling Eyes

I've asked for the registration of the bike, asked about number of previous owners, how long he's had it, etc, so I can try check it out a little before wasting either of our time meeting up.

Custom paint job itself might not be an issue, and to be honest, I think it looks quite smart in black and white (yes...the stickers I'm not overly keen o) - so provided that was done as a modification (ad done well) rather than as part of a repair, then I'm ok with that.

Might be worth asking why its a non-standard scheme and what its original colour is.

Find his name, I'm sure we'll find pics of it crashed Laughing

Ok - lets ignore the bodywork and pretend this bike isn't the one mightend up with if decide to go for one.

I appreciate the pointers about the bodywork looking non standard and that is definitely food for thought on the one shown here.

So does anyone know of common problems with the 750 K7 in general?

Any common failures I should look out for?

My last Suzuki was a Bandit 600 many years ago, and every bolt seemed to be made of cheese. Is this likely to be the same?

Do they corrode any more than any other bike if used all year and not cleaned regularly?

How is the engine finish? Does it last well? This has been a particular bug-bear for me on every bike, apart from the Z1000 , which still looks lovely.

Anything I should look out for when test riding one (not necessarily this one) that is specific to this particular model?

Well, to be fair to the guy, he's replied to all my messages with info that sounds believable.

It's had 5 former keepers.

The reason the paintjob/fairing is different, is because the previous owner was an independent bike mechanic, who also had another 750 as his track bike, and used the original fairings on the track bike, and kept this other bike as the tarted up road legal bike.

He's sent some more pics through, and it does look tidy.

Anyway, going to hopefully meet up on Sunday morning so we can both have a look at each others bikes.

You generally take off the standard fairings on a track bike to spare them not the other way around, sounds like bullshit to me, personally id avoid.

Yeah, could well be - unless of course the standard fairings were a bit scratched up or something, of course.

Well, no harm in going to have a look anyway. It's not like I'm committing to anything right now.

At least I'm going in with eyes open, so thanks for the steer on the bodywork chaps!

Hmm...the plot thickens.

Now I've got the reg, I've checked the MOT history.

All the MOTs are there, and mileage all stacks up.

However, the MOT for 2014 expired in June 2014, then there's no MOT until July 2015.

During that time, the mileage went up by 5k Confused

Track bike? Do they need MOT's? I assume not given the lights and stuff that get deleted.

Got a car trader mate, he's running a HPI for me for free - just to check things out properly.

It's got no advisories on the last MOT to be fair.

Still...5k miles on a track is a proper raping.

The mileage on the MOT register would have been taken when the MOT test was completed (i.e. June 2013). So that 5000 miles is actually 2 years, one with an MOT, one without.

Track bikes don't require an MOT.

Personally, I wouldn't bother. Why would you trade a straight, honest, original bike for a non-standard bike with a suspect history? It would have to be a damned good deal, which would only raise the suspicion!

Sell your bike. Buy a good example of the bike you want.
