Got a friend whose 17 year old son is learning to drive. She split up with the dad many years ago.

The dad has insured his son as a named driver on his car, but son would rather mum came with him on L-plate missions as she's more chilled out.

Mum's insurance on her own car covers her TPFT on other cars, but she's not named on the dad's policy.

Question - can she legally supervise him in the dad's car? The link below suggests not but (a) it doesn't make it 100% clear, and (b) it's not actual t's and c's.

https://www.gocompare.com/car-insurance/teaching-a-learner-to-drive/

"The learner must either be insured as a named driver on your vehicle's policy or, if they're learning in their own car, they must be insured as the main driver, and the supervisor must be insured as a named driver."[/i]

Supervised is supervised. As long as there's no endorsement to state he must be accompanied by a named driver only then it's all fair game.

By endorsement do you mean something in the policy?

Thanks

Arry covers it nicely.

But this would be a better option to ensure Dad does not lose any NCD in the event of a prang..

Correct. There's very little chance of there being something in the base wording but you may find an endorsement code in the schedule with the wording behind it. If it's there, it would have been added at the time the son was named onto the policy. And I'd still suggest it's unlikely.

The dad's a dick, not fussed about his NCD. Just wanted to make sure the mum wouldn't get in shit if there was a crash.

Thanks anyhow! Thumbs Up

Depending on the car, a temporary separate learner policy can usually be pretty cheap. When I was learning I was insured on my mum's mondeo for about £60 ish for two weeks
