For a while now, I'd been in two minds about getting an open-face helmet. They look cool and the weather very often isn't really all that bad.

I had a minor bump about 4 weeks ago and then a more serious (but still relatively minor) incident yesterday.

In spite of that, I thought I'd share some of the damage done to my lid after taking a spill at what was probably no more than 15-20mph by the time I'd brake hard enough to lose the front end.

With this being a flip-front lid, I had been riding around with it flipped up on occasion. After doing some research and uncovering more than a few stories like this (possibly NSFW) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_0fUTO6JH8 - I'd been making a conscious effort to flip it down.

Luckily, yesterday I did just that about a minute and a half before my spill. Not severe, I know, but this was a low-speed fall and I daresay that my face wouldn't have been quite so resilient as my lid.

You can probably categorise this under 'preaching to the choir' but I'm sold personally.

Do you wear a full face helmet when cycling?

Or any helmet when cycling for that matter? Laughing

Lid yes, full face, of course not.

Hand on heart, I ride like a bit of twat on my push bike and covered +6000 miles of city commuting over winter 2014/15, with a further +3000 miles in 2015. I've ridden the pushbike for several hundred miles commuting through central London as well.

Total accidents with all that included one run-in with a bus who forced me into a pavement and t-boning another cyclist who flew across a main road without braking or looking. A few near misses but nothing serious.

Maybe it's because I was on a scooter and not a 'real man's bike'.

Guy I worked with came off his scootay wearing an open face helmet, cut his face up. He wears a full face lid now...

Bicycles don't tend to throw you to the ground with the same force Smile Granted you can smack your head, but in cycling accidents I've never had more than a graze or small cut. My motorbike accidents have left me feeling like I've been raped by a Panda.

Open face all the way for me.

Better vision, no faffing with glasses when I take it off, and no need to take it off when going in and out of offices in London. Lighter than other helmets in the price bracket, no steamy glasses and cooler in summer (as in temperature not style).

The only draw back being you have to listen to a lot of preachy judgemental nit wits about kitten death and face removal.

The only alternative for me is a dual sport or MX helmet, because having a massive peak made a huge difference when riding 40 miles in the direction of the sun each day.

I'd never dream of riding without a full face. I'm not the prettiest guy, so I need to do whatever I can to preserve what I have.

I've been contemplating a flip front, primarily for use at places like petrol stations where it seems a little more polite to show some face skin. Don't think I'd ever consider riding with it flipped up - it'd probably fill up with bees knowing my luck.

Anyone that rides a motorcycle capable of doing any kind of speed who utilises some of that speed at some time won't be wearing an open face helmet. Ever had a bumble bee in the face at 150mph? I haven't and I don't intend to. I have hit numerous birds of varying sizes over the years and if I'd taken them on the face then I'd most likely have crashed.

If the main reason you wear a crash helmet, other than legal compliance, is to keep your head safe it's hard to argue the case for an open face. I don't buy the vision thing unless your eyes are on the side of your face Wink

Especially when they admit to being unable to control a bike at 15mph.

There's a third category of helmet you know Shocked - open face with a chin bar. We had a good thread about them recently https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=310745&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=25

Here's mine

I need a full face to conceal the massive shiteating grin that overcomes my face when I ride, if any were to witness my horrific riding rictus I would be hauled off the bike and thrown into to jail because no one has any right to be that happy.

I ride with the flip up unless I'm going over 60. Which on the Enfield isn't that often.

How much tarmac hurts when doing 20mph on a pushbike is no different to how much it hurts when doing 20mph on a motorbike.

So a pretty minor scuff on the visor which is a good 2-3" away from your face.

I'd surmise that were you to repeat that accident without a helmet on, your head wouldn't have touched the ground at all.

Bicycles tend to fold from underneath you, motorbikes generally want to keep going whether you're on them or not. Have you ever had a cycling accident and had to walk (x amount of metres/yards) down the road to retrieve your bike? Or been thrown so far you are x amount of metres away from your bike? Smile

I know a pedalist with a scarred chin. They got it from some sort of low speed pedal bike incident. The details escape me now, though I think it
involved them going over the bars. So you should defo wear a full face for the pedal bike. HTH Thumbs Up
