Hey guys,

There is a GPZ500s on sale for under £400 and the main problem is that the owner lost the key and had to fit new ignition and after fitting it the bike no longer starts.

Is it a hard job to do or find actual cause? Or should I just avoid such bike?

Thanks Smile

It can't be too difficult a job unless that model have a transponder in the key. Does he still have the original lock that he has lost the key for? If so you might be able to remove the switch from the lock and plug that directly into the loom.

Here's the ebay advert: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201569506903?euid=d55761c24d874d5aa5fb445fa352725c&cp=1

Simple job. A friend of mine put a chinese ignition barrel on a motorcycle that was botched with an old night lamp switch. You're gonna need a multimeter to check the voltage between the wires.

Check dx.com and other Chinaman's places. There are even sets as such: iginition barell + tank cap + seat lock, all with 1 set of keys.

I would take it, just fixing the ignition barrel will raise its value. Thumbs Up

I can't tell from the pictures, but I would have a look at it up close. You're gonna need a new chain and sprockets, that's for sure, and the rest, well will see about that.
The only problem I've got with it, as the ignition barelle is fecked, you can't start the engine. If the engine looks like the rest of the bike, then it's not worth your time, money nor effort.

All that, considering, I've got no idea what GPZ's in the UK go for, at the moment.

Rust is just a by-product of neglect. Just from a quick glance at the photos:

The rear tyre is bald
The front tyre is cracked between the treads
The right fork is pissing oil
The exhaust looks ready to dissolve
The chain hasn't been lubed but there's a snottoiler fitted so the owner's a real lazy bastard.

Do you think that an owner who subjects his bike to such a lack of basic maintenance is going to have done regular oil changes? I don't. Plus it's got an electrical fault and you can't hear it run.

So tyres £150 chain & sprockets £120 your purchase cost just went from £360 to £630 just from the advert pictures and you might as well buy a helicoil kit whilst your spending because the bike's been eaten by salt and any work you attempt is going to be a story of snapped bolts and rotted parts.

That thing is a heap, it's a project not a bike.

Hi

Ignition switch should be plug and play. Undoing the bolts that hold the switch on is the difficult bit (they should be shear bolts). If it won't start with the new switch then either it is a dodgy switch, or the problem is elsewhere.

All the best

Katy

Mmm, I'd say a lost key is the least of that bike's problems. Looks like it's had a low speed RHS drop as well (skewed indicator, scuffed bar end, replacement levers).

It is at least an aftermarket system without the E-Z-rot link pipe, so may be usable.

That's got "likely story" written all over it. Yeah, mate, yeah, great runner, no problems, just can't start it right now, no worries though, was working fine until it wasn't.

No way I'd bid on that sight unseen. It might be even worse than it looks in the pictures. Let the auction run out, then your opening bid should be offering to do him a favour by taking it away.
