PostPosted: 21:28 - 26 Apr 2016    Post subject: Helmet with internal sun visor? Reply with quote

Hello!

So I'm a new rider and I've just bought my bike. What I need now is a helmet. I've looked at different ones, and I've found one. The AGV K-3 SV. It's fairly cheap and comes with a clear visor and a internal sun visor. Is that a good combo? Or should I go with a cheaper one, like the MDS and buy a tinted visor that I will have to swap?

Thanks in advance for replies!

I would say always get a helmet with an internal sun visor, no messing about as it gets darker when you are out and about.

Internal sun visor all the way. At least you can flick them up and down as required. Unlike with a tinted visor.....

Visor strips do a good, actually fantastic job. When I did contemplate getting one Shark had some pretty decent lids with sun visors.

I'd prioritise pinlock posts over a flippy sun visor. I rarely use mine. Rarely is not never, but I prefer sunglasses.

The internal visor on the K3-SV is crap but there are limits to how tinted they can make them. Depending on't weather I use a dark visor or shades.

ps. the K3-SV does come with pinlocks and an insert.

It certainly is. Not dark enough and not big enough, also the mechanism to flip it down is stiff and flimsy at the same time. I just put a dark visor on mine.

I've got a LS2 370 (not sure what the latest model equivalent is) which has an internal sun visor.
It's useful and quick to use, once you get used to the button locations.

Like pinlock I probably wouldn't buy a helmet without it now as it's the difference when the sun is low is being able to see the road or just seeing glare.
Ok pinlock is all round awesome and a sun visor is situational, but when I see something like this I think yep sun visor is a must.

The internal ones can be a bit poor but miles better than not having one.
Night time riding with a dark visor can be a nightmare (and I think it's Illegal) so unless you like changing visors the a light tint/clear is the norm for me. I do wear glasses so sun glasses are out, and my standard reactolight (or whatever they're called) aren't always the glasses I'm wearing on the bike.
So the internal visor has been very good for me (and I only got my 1st one 2 years back). Cool

I recently purchased a Shark S700S which has an internal sun visor. The only annoying thing is flicking it down results in it smacking your nose. My point therefore is it might be worth trying the helmet on and making sure the visor actually fits you ok. Can recommend the Shark though, comes with pinlock too.

Make sure you try for fit before you buy.

I wanted a hjc is17 as my fg15 fits really well. The IS17 is a different shape. Girlfriend has one and it works well enough.

shark s700/s900 visors smack me in the nose. Vision r and speed r both fit well.

Pinlocks get destroyed if you carry a spare visor about your waist. Used to cost me a fortune. shark speed r, clear visor and pinlock, decent internal sunvisor and various electrical tape/vinyl sunstrips do the job. At the moment i just have half an inch of electrical tape on the top of the sunvisor. Any more and i cant see if i tuck in behind the screen to get out of wind/rain/hail. I had a nice vinyl sunstrip but i tore it off the first time i had a long motorway trip on the bandit as it was pissing it down and behind the screen was dry and warm but riding with my neck bent back to keep my head up was uncomfortable at best.

My Schuberth S2 has an internal visor, my first lid with one. Really like it, I use it a lot, very handy. Great been able to flip it down if you round a corner into low sun light, or back up as you zip through a tunnel or it turns dusk.

Couple of downsides I've found:-
The Schuberth one doesn't come down quite enough, so the lower edge is in your field of view too much. Initially quite distracting, but I'm kinda used to it now.
This time of year, I find I want to use the sunvisor a lot for the low winter/spring sun, but it steams up really easily on cold mornings, if vents are shut or stationary at lights. Obviously, only got the pinlock on the outer visor. At least I can flip it up quickly to see.

I've used the k3-sv for the last year. I too confirm the internal visor is shit. It doesn't really block the sun as such, what it does really well is stop you seeing anything at all when the sun hits it.. i switched to a tinted visor that is much much better at the job.

Also, as above, get the clear one with the pinlock.. its defo worth it. K3-sv otherwise is a very good helmet for the price range Thumbs Up

In what way does it stop you seeing anything?
Is it too dark or does it distort your view ?

Like I said above, it's not too dark, it's too light. When direct sunlight hits it at a certain angle there seems to be some kind of reflection thing going on. All in all, it's useless, and that's why I just stuck a dark tint visor on.

Karma boost points for perfect use of 'worserer' Sir. Thumbs Up

OP I use a Shooberth C3 flip up/down with the internal tint ting.
It is brill. I never need to mash my £200 Ooklays in my pockets now.

The only bad point is that the tint is only coating which one finds can be rubbed off if some wanker tries to polish scratches out using Xerapol plastic polish. Embarassed

I have the Shoei GT-Air and love the internal visor - it's easy to fiip up and down when riding and saves faffing with shades

Well, thanks for the great answers. From what I've understood, I'll have to go with the MDS M13 with a tinted visor. Getting the AGV with a tinted visor is simply too expensive for a 16 year old like me.

Cheers everyone!

Only needed with cheap crappy visors, and at the expense of being able to see properly at night.

The S900c does that too. Laughing

Tbh, I've had two lids with internal sun visors (Carberg & Shark) and haven't found either of them particularly good.

I wouldn't have one without a pinlock though.
