Hi All,

Anyone can tell me the normal running temperature of a 2008 Yamaha FZ1n? About to purchase one from a dealer looked at the gauge after taking it for a test run the gauge was showing circa 115 degrees. Thanks in advance.

Seems quite high. I have a 2008 FZ1-S (same engine, just with fairing), and usually maxes out at about 101-ish before the fan kicks in and general cooling.

I had a CBR600-RR before this that used to run at 115 degrees, even going up to 120 - 125 in Central London traffic with the overheating light on. Turned out the rad was f*cked, totally blocked up and cooling fins overstuck with road crap. Had rad replaced and didn't go up much past 105.

Could be worth avoiding. Usual country road riding will see me about 90ish degrees.

Even if set to Fahrenheit, 100 Celsius (normal max temp) is 212 Fahrenheit Laughing

I'd agree with Doovy. Most bikes I've been on at have a digi gauge would be ~80deg when running normally in airflow. For a bike to get to 115 that would need to be slow moving traffic on a hot day.

I mentioned it and he said he'd just taken ownership a day or two before, hadn't been serviced and the throttle was a bit sticky. He's getting it serviced and I'll have another ride before I make my final decision. Stunning bike despite the niggling issue.

My Speed Four is the same, but not without reason.

That doesn't sound right.

I've just been riding my dads 08 FZ1, with fairing and when moving the temperature is in the mid 70's at this time of year, going up to low 80's in the height of summer. When I say moving I mean 30MPH and above.

If you slow down or stop, then the temp very quickly rises. It takes about a minute and a half when stationary to go from 80-100.

The fan should be kicking in at 100 degress, unless it's very hot the fan should be running and the temp shouldn't really go much above 105.

There is something wrong with this bike. Have a look at the radiator and see what state it's in, check that the fan is coming on at 100, if not, there is an electrical problem, try the fuse, look for debris in the fan, (if it's been on a trackday and been in the gravel, there is usually always gravel in the fan, I know, it happened to me).

Precisely what "0l0dom0l0" said!

At this time of year mine hovvers around mid 70's to high 80's, I've seen 101 - 103 when sitting idling in warm weather, 115 sounds way too high!

Has the water got any antifreeze in it and what level is it showing in the expansion tank?
As already stated, check the fan is cutting in, when it should, 100 on the gauge!

I'd ignore everything that he says and go only by what the bike's doing.

I ride a 2007 FZ1 N a fair amount. 75-80 is typical on most days. 115 is waaayyyyyy to high IMO.

Only time I ever saw temperatures like that was on my fully faired VFR in heavy traffic on a hot day with a faulty reg/rec and the fan failing to kick in. I think it was about 115 when the gauge started flashing at me. At 120 I think I actually heard the bike scream "owww my headgasket".

(Now ride an FZ1S - it's never got close to that)

Thanks mate, will have a look and make sure before putting cash down. PS> The fan was howling by the time I got back to the dealership and it was showing around the 111 (F/C) cant remember which either way I thought it was high and mentioned it to the bloke at London Motorbike sales (https://www.themotorbikemanlondon.co.uk)

Kept an eye on mine today on way to work.

Riding on the A roads to work was about 80 - 85.

Filtering and stopped at lights for a few seconds was about 90 - 100.

Fan kicked in at 100, rose to a maximum of 103 (stationary) and then back to 99 after the fan was on for about a minute.

It was about 10 degrees out and sunny.

I've just had a look on the website.

Looks like he's got 2 in the shop and red and silver with 9k and a black naked with 22k.

Is there any reason you're going for the naked over the faired, given they're the same price and the faired one has 13k less miles on it?

I've been riding the faired one, and I have to say the fairing is lovely, coming from my naked FZ6, where the lack of fairing is very tiring on any journey other than a 30 min one.

Agreed. Fairing is good.

Just FYI, I paid £3.2k for mine (2008 model, with 17k miles) last August.

Wow! I haven't found one at that price from a dealer, I like the naked ones over faired, more for aesthetics more than anything. I'm 31 so the wind etc isn't an issue.

PS. Like the look of your bike tho.

I'm all for naked bikes, as I love mine to bits and I'd love a naked FZ1 as well.

But if anyone asked me to do anything other than ride to the shops on it, I'd probably say no.

Motorway speeds is just hell.

I love feeling the resistance of wind against my person. Riding for me is an experience not just a mode of transport.
