Mrs is trying to run some statistical analysis for end of PhD but is a bit stuck. Hopefully some clever people here know more than the rest of the internet.

Trying to run an analysis on 1 categorical independent variable (with 3 levels), and 1 categorical dependent variable.

If this was 2x2 it was Chi-Square. She thinks it's some sort of regression, but, everything she is finding is asking for 1 of the variables to be continuous and not categorical.

I can't really answer this as the question is too broad. There's a whole area of statistical techniques relating to cluster analysis. Just hazarding a guess at k-nearest neighbour as a place to start.

KNN is classification, K means is clustering.

Really don't understand the question to try and provide an actual answer.
