PostPosted: 23:33 - 01 Feb 2016    Post subject: Eye Surgery This Morning Reply with quote

After 2 cancellations including one on Friday when I was preped and ready to go to the table I went into school this morning and was just getting ready to go into class for period one when my phone rang, "can you get to Solihull in the next hour?" I had prepared cover lessons for this week as I had expected to be out for part of this week if my surgery had happened on Friday so I asked my technician to look my class whilst I ran to find the Head.
A Neighbour drove me to hospital and I was preped by 10.30 and on the slab by 10.50. eye surgery is not pleasant but it is interesting, anesthesia is by eyedrops and they kill a lot of the pain but you can still feel the knife and the tools going in. They inject a blue dye and as the lens is broken up and sucked out all you see is a mass of swirling colour, I had not eaten and this did not help and at times it felt I was falling through the operating table. I was a bit wobbly after and with not much vision but that is now coming back and I seem to have better sight in it than the previously operated eye that got cocked up.

What did you have done Wal?

When I had an eye op it was under a general to remove a large metal splinter for the middle of the eyeball. I don't think I could have let them operate on my eye with me awake.

I take my hat off to you. I am short sighted and no way could have anyone messing with my eyes. I wore contacts once and I couldn't let the optician touch my eyes - pull lids back or anything. He was glad when I left, wear glasses now and am short sighted to the tune of -4.50 in each eye. Laser surgery is the way to go but I'm too much of a big girls blouse to have it done Sad

How do you keep your eye still, do they clamp your eyelids too?

They eye is clamped open but you are in control of the eye, some of the eye-drops kill the blink reflex but you must stare ahead at the light, This is easy until they rip out the lens and inject weird stuff into the eye so that all your references go to hell!

Sounds horrendous. I'm slowly going short sighted but won't go the glasses route till it becomes an impairment. Surgery is the other option but sounds like such fun Very Happy

My Dad had this done a year or so back and said all he saw was vague shadows, during the process.

For him the recuperation was a PITA more than the surgery. A couple of weeks with one bad eye and one good = popping a lens out of his glasses and coping with questionable depth-perception etc. One of his new lenses was placed badly and he had to go back and have it redone.

Glad to know you survived it, Ariel xx

Makes me scared just thinking about the bit where you said they rip out the lense and inject stuff - and you can see the needle coming????? Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

I would have had someone's arm off by that point.

You do not see a lot Jen, you do get a hell of a light show as they inject coloured liquids into the eye. and take the lens out. The new lens going in is quiet sore but quite fun to watch as it unfolds and things come back into focus.

Four weeks on and I had my post op consultation this morning. Pleased to say that the hospital passed my eye off with flying colours today although I had to cancel my opticians this afternoon because of the drugs that had been used in it this morning. Once I get glasses that match my eyes I will be able to see again.

Far from it Pete, my eyes now need very little correction as the new lenses have seen to that.
