got a message from a guy i ride with saying the bolt for his gear lever had fallen off, i thought he meant off the shaft bolt so grabbed some 10mm bolts and went to meet him at about 11pm to see it was the main gear lever bolt that had fallen out and his gear lever was on the floor.

i had no bolts big enough so opted for some epic bodgery, few cable ties to make sure the lever stayed where it should be and take up some space and a big allen key bashed into the hole.

worked so well hes still using it now till his new one turns up

A mates GS1000 stripped the threads on the cam cap studs.

They sat a small block of wood on top of the affected cam cap, replaced the rocker cover then put a load binder right round the engine and cawed it down hard.

non bike

holed my fuel tank in my Suzuki SJ, so bodged this

https://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/mudcow007/Image048_zps7rloezlx.jpg

got me home. I had to keep stopping to release the pressure from the plastic drum that was rolling around the passenger footwell that contained the remains of my fuel

Every time i refilled (alot) the tape was melting because of the fuel...it was horrendous

Funny though, think i got about 50 miles like that Shocked

With the early 1100GS with the plastic tank, when you run out of petrol you can get another few miles by laying the bike down on its left side.

When the exhaust downpipe on my KLE500 rusted through and snapped I hammered a wedge of wood between it and the sump guard to push it close enough together that it sounded almost normal again.

The wood charring smelled like barbecue too Very Happy

A professional bodger would have trimmed the cable ties.

Au contraire, a professional bodger is going to reuse the cable ties. Wink

Not bad, how's this;

Crashed at a round-a-bout scrapped some engine off. Needed the bike the next day, so glued a metal plate on the engine to keep it going.

Just Showed and Telled this, but for the record: technically I got home on Saturday with this pissing oil onto the exhaust, driveway, garage floor...

... and upgraded it to ...

https://i.imgur.com/D7CqUCR.png

... before going back out again.

I'm not really sure that counts as a bodge, as it's doing a better job than the original. It's had a sand down and couple of coats of teak oil since to bring out the grain.

I've never actually broken down so I haven't had to bodge. Yet.

Did have a moment of genius on friday though on the way home. Big smash up on the motorway, sat in traffic in my car with no food, no drink, phone on low battery and it was the one day I left my ecig at home.

Managed to pass the time by scavenging a stale packet of fags, an empty lighter and a can of deodorant and managing to make fire long enough to have a smoke.
Just wish I hadn't been in the car so I could have filtered to the front and had a go at motorway Grand Prix.

Duck tape works well. There is no oil in that part of the engine, you just need to keep water out

It's only a bodge if you don't cut the ends off those cable ties.

Blew the turbo on my bora up the back of Stelvi pass in Italy, bypassed the turbo by rearranging the boost hoses and using a piece of fabric as an air filter direct to the inlet and blocked up the oil feed and return at the side of the road and then completed the last 3000 miles of the rally with about 40bhp, switching the aircon off to get up hills and taking a run at everything. It would do about 75 flat out on the flat.

cam caps sheared on my gs500e cut down a small tree and wedged it between caps and rocker cover and then between rocker cover and frame.

got puncture, snapped branch off tree, shoved in hole, rode home.

float valve O-rings failed on fazer 600 in bosnia, made new ones from cut up fuel overflow pipe, rode home.

fuel tank on zzr600 leaking at pub, used superglue and tissue paper from the pub to repair, as far as I am aware it is still like it now.

mole grips make good gear/brake/clutch levers.

cable ties can always be reused.

Not on the bike, as the only time my bike broke, I was also broken from falling off it.

In the car though, the thermoswitch for the fan broke on my car, so I pulled the connector and bridged the plug with a small section of wire and some spade connectors. The fan was running the whole time but the engine didn't overheat. Ran like that for a week or two until the new part arrived.

A few years later, whilst on our way to alton towers in my mates sierra sapphire (1.6), it started to over heat. We noticed the fan hadn't come on and I knew what I had to do. I bothered a few females in the little chef we'd stopped at for a hair pin, snipped the bulbous ends of it and bridged the plug going to the thermoswitch. Fan came on, engine ran cool and a fun day was had by all. Just over a year later and that little hair pin was still doing the business, right up to the point the car was scrapped (corrosion and drive issues, nothing engine/cooling system related).
