Have some Trees/Shrubs in the garden that are damaging Fences/Patio I've cut them down and now I need to remove the roots the biggest has a root diameter of 25cm ish the smallest about 10 and there are 5 in total.

Any advice/tips? I'm guessing this will be a fucker to do.

Erm, let me think . . . (tough one, this)

Yeah, wasn't it Wernher von Braun, the great German rocket scientist who, having found himself in a bit of a hole at the end of the Second World War, gave to mankind an invention that, eventually, would get your problem off the ground?

Now, put your shoulder to that which was invented around 3,500 years ago.

Loosen the soil with a spade then tie a rope around the stump and pull it out.

Leave three or four feet of the trunk above ground (leverage). I dig out to expose roots, (I use a garden trowel or smallest spade) then cut the roots with reciprocating saw, or twat them with a very sharp mattock.

I did two last week in a customers garden, both around 50cm trunks, got them both out in 2 hours.

I've done more than a few of these - a mattock is the answer - it's like a pick axe but with 2 larger blades angled 90 degrees to each other.

This stump, 90 mins, just me (including getting it out of the hole); quite satisfying too.[/img]

If the stumps are dead, they won't grow any more and will cause no further lifting. You're likely to cause far more damage trying to remove them, including your back Rolling Eyes

If they're not dead, go to countrywide, find Rosate 36 or similar 'neat' glyphosate and paint on the stumps with a brush after making a fresh cut. Thumbs Up

Edit: If you really want to go he-man on them, the mattock was my weapon of choice for occasionally hacking out stumps during 8 years of tree surgery.

In future, leave 3-4 ft of stem for leverage - there's always one bastard root right underneath holding on like a loose tooth.

They will need to come up, 2 are in the way for day to day stuff and 3 are where my garage will be.

A Mattock sounds like it will help I'll have a look Thumbs Up

This advice is the bollocks, Mattocks go through everything.

I supervised, occaision smashed fuck out of the stump with a sledge and cut the roots with my reciprocating saw, my missus did all the work.
