You could start with an MOT History Check (assuming you are buying in the UK) ____________________ Triumph Sprint ST 1050. And it's Red. |

You can check MOT history and recorded mileage from 2005 onwards here https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history
How many miles- how long is a piece of string? It's down to service history and condition really. ____________________ stinkwheel: He had an animated .gif of a cat performing fellatio. It's not socially acceptable. It can have real life adverse effects on other people. |

There are loads around, so for once you can afford to pick and choose.
Up locally, 2006 fully faired, 12 11 months year's MOT, 19K miles, asking £1800 £1650 £1500 and still not sold after 3+ weeks.
You'll see people asking daft prices for their pride-and-joys, but they're cheap bikes, £4600 brand new, so there's no need to pander to their delusions. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Suzuki do 0% over 48 months, which is a pretty attractive offer IMO. £2k for a 10+ year old bike seems a lot for me, (Especially for an SV!) |
Can't afford that. £2000 is my upper limit, I will have quite a lot of expenses on top of that (insurance, security devices, road tax etc.). |
3 years warranty. No MOT for 3 years. All consumables starting out fresh with nothing to replace. Under £100 a month, so you've got 20 months of riding before it starts to cost you anything over and above what a £2000 purchase would have done.
I'd either be looking cheaper than £2000, or seriously considering a new purchase while there's still a few of the 'real' SV650S coming through the dealer chain.
30,000 miles is nothing for a well maintained engine, but there's the tyres, chain, sprockets, suspension, brakes and bearings to consider. Buy the wrong example and you could find yourself needing to drop £500 or more or in in short order just on consumables.
Given the number of low mileage SVs around, a 30,000 miler would have to be cheap, because you're not going to have buyers queuing up to buy it from you.
I'm not saying avoid it, just don't value any bits of bolt on tat or an "amazing example, very very reluctant sale" advert over one that's got fewer miles on it and consumables in better condition. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Thanks Rogerborg. The main reason why I'm not buying a new bike is because I think I will take 3rd part only insurance. I checked how much would be theft insurance and it's minimum £1200 a year (!) for a £2000 bike, so for a brand new bike it would be probably even higher. If I loose a bike worth £1500-£2000 I guess I will just bite the bullet if it happens, but £5000 is too much to risk. |

Ah, fair point on the insurance. London? Sad times.
3rd party is fine, although TPFT does usually come out cheaper for me, with or without a hefty voluntary excess. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I got mine at 32k and it sounded like a rattley, knocky bag of nails. It's now done 48k and sounds exactly the same
In America there are several forum posts from owners who claim to be getting anything from 120k to over 200k
Whether they are true or not...
In the UK the SV is mainly seen as a first bike, and as such it may pass through many hands. The more owners, the greater chance of poor maintenance potentially.
If the SV is run low on oil, and wheelied a lot, it fecks the front cylinder.
If the bike doesn’t have too many owners from new and comes with some sort proof of service (either photos or receipts, or a stamped log book if you can trust it) then you could be reasonably confident.
Good idea going for a K3 onwards as many of the standard failure points were ironed out.
Have to say, 0% finance over 48 months is appealing. Particularly as you have the first 20months payments covered and won't need to fork out 3 MOT's, for tyres, brake pads, chain, sprockets etc for the first 10k miles
Admittedly you'd have to keep the bike for 2 years to be able to pay down enough to cover the depreciation, but still.
EDIT:
Missed the bit about insurance, sorry. |
