My girlfriend, who has just done her CBT, has bought a CBF125 2013 to get into biking. However, it is now at 8k miles and although has had regular oil changes it needs the internal oil strainer cleaning.

I think this is beyond my abilities, and was wondering what the cost would be. I've been quoted £100 for a service (oil, strainer, air filter) but think this is very expensive for what it is.

What cost should I be looking at? Anyone handy with spanners Portsmouth way want to earn some pennies?

Oh, and she got an Almax chain thanks to your recommendations!

When I had my CBF125 (14 Reg) service cost was always around £100 for just the normal every 2500 mile service, dont have any of the invoices around so cant narrow it down more but was around an hour labour then the remainder on the oil, filter etc

It's not a hard job. Probably 30 mins. Won't be an issue for you. Or pay your 100 quid..

i did it on my honda msx 125 at 600 miles after watching this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4xIrXh10rg

i refuse to pay £130 for them to do this which took me 30 mins as was my first time.
the 10w30 7100 motul fully synthetic oil was £13.45 and the two gaskets i needed cost me £10

This youtube video looks like your bike: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1lYyQAtJng

I do recommend you buy this to hold the oil spinner in place: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOTORCYCLE-MOTORBIKE-FLYWHEEL-FLY-WHEEL-CLUTCH-PULLER-PULLEY-HOLDER-45-120mm-/231600003379?hash=item35ec6f9933:g:v5sAAOSwT6pVhrqN

It feels so good when you do these things yourself not only cos you save money but you know its been actually done as some of these dealers LIE!

cant lie though when i get another R1 or GSXR 1000 later this year ill leave the valve clearences to MH motorycycles in bromley to do for me as the big bikes looks daunting but these 125cc are a walk in the park to do!

It's a 3 year old cheap Indian hack, there's no way I'd pay to have routine maintenance done to it.

Plus, I'd expect that unless you actually stand and watch them doing it, they might "forget" to clean the strainer. If you need to put the time in to ensure that it's done right, you may as well do it yourself. It's a really simple procedure.

I also vote do it yourself! Did some similar work on my CG125 last weekend and can say it's super easy. You can also take off the 3 three screws on the centrifugal oil filter also and give it a wipe. Only annoying thing to watch for is if the old gasket is baked onto the crankcase cover....took me ages to scrap the old one off.
