Currently searching for my first bike and got it down to either a Yamaha XJ6N or a 2006 Honda Hornet, with the digital dash and USD gold forks. Just wondered if anyone has owned both and could give their opinion?

My brief thoughts:
XJ6N: I trained on the XJ6N and really liked it, was so smooth to ride and I like it’s modern looks. I also like the fact it is fuel injection so no carbs / choke to deal with on cold mornings.
Hornet: Always loved the styling of the hornet and as a teenager, it was the bike I always thought I would ride one day. However there is no ignoring that it looks a few years older than the XJ6N.

Budget is up to £3k and the bike will be used for commuting and weekend trips / fun.

Not owned a Hornet. I was put off by the apparent zippo-lighter sized petrol tank. I needed a bigger range than the rumoured 120 miles. Got a Fazer instead. Modern Hornets may be better - this was a while back.

My wife has an XJ6n. Easy to ride, gives you a lot of confidence. Flickable. Dangerously quiet. I prefer some sort of fairing.

I owned a Hornet before. As angyjonny said, the 120 mile mark for the older Hornets is correct. Pathetic fuel range.

However, the low range grunt was incredible. I wouldn't know anything about the modern models, I'm afraid.

Why the 2006 Hornet? For 3k you'll easily get a newer shape. Infact just recently I have seen a really well looked after hornet, gold 08 plate with plenty of nice bits on for £2.8k.

I got my '07 plate for a considerable chunk less over 3 years ago now - jesus christ where has time gone!

I've still got it.

I keep saying I will get rid soon and get something with a bit more character, but in all honesty it just does everything it says on the tin so well. Perfect big bike in my opinion.

In the real world there is probably not a huge amount of difference to an XJ / Hornet, go for whatever you like the look of the most. Maybe test ride both?

For me, hornets look nicer, and reliability doesn't even need to be asked about.. they can be picked up for very good value now and hold their values, too.

Tank range will be 140+, 150 miles or more easily if just commuting.

I purely have this bike for fun and it still doesn't disappoint me. From 7k+ the front goes light and the burble from the standard exhaust doesn't disappoint!

Just my 2p I don't think you can go wrong with one! Thumbs Up

Never been too keen on the shape of the newer ones. Its the double underseat bit I don't like. If there was a way to remove the lower bit, I think that would improve it, but from what I have read it is all one section. That said, it is growing on me a little bit and I appreciate there are benefits such as the ABS, digital dash and more modern styling.

I must admit I do like the older ones a little more, and the news ones I'm not overly keen on myself. But, they do the job well, and I prefer it to an XJ personally.

Yeah the engine is a peach, CBR engine just detuned for more midrange torque apparently. Mines on 34k at the moment, plenty online that are over 60k! Thumbs Up

I have a Yamaha XJ6N, which I changed to from a CBR600F main reason being of my commute through Central London. I find the XJ6N to be a good bike with a good level of comfort, low seat height, decent fuel economy, good turning circle, looks nice and IMO has decent usable power.

The XJ6N is nice and smooth in the lower rev range. I can filter around low speed traffic just using the clutch without too much trouble. The only downside would be the weight at 205kg but you get used to it.

If going for an older Hornet, 15t is standard Smile

I had an 1999 hornet and was great! But I did spend about £600 'sorting' it.

Front suspension oil and springs renewed and rear shock changed for an Ohlins (luckily got a second hand one) as both were dangerously bouncy.

Braided hoses, new fluid and brake pads helped the brakes.

17" front wheel upgrade from 00-06 hornets for better choice of tyres.

Renthal bars & screen for comfort and a hugger to keep crap off everywhere.

The rest, exhaust, air filter, chain & sprockets, servicing items and shiny bits are all dirt cheap.

Fuel range - yeah about 120ish maybe a bit more on a steady cruise.

Toured Scotland on mine and had a blast, coped really well with it!

A good fun little bike Smile
