So, I did a fresh instal of W7 home 64bit (legal copy) on my brothers computer (Athlon procesor, DDR3, SATA 3, meaing it's quite ''modern''). Tried to get the drivers but the moment I start downloading the files, the download speed goes down to 0kbps and then the download stops. I can browse the internet, but can't download a thing, not even the MS windows updates.

I already checked the router, which works alright and 3 other devices connected to it work as well. I also tried an older, but working, PCI network card, and it did not help.

Any thoughts?

It's probably something in windows, try making a new user, remember to set it as admin and try that. If that works, do all the updates, download an antivirus and an anti-malware program and run them.

Report back.

I gave up counting the amount of failed win7 updating machines.

Google the latest update client. Install the hotfix.

Then delete the repository folders on the machine with the wau service turned off. Re enable it and attempt again.

If you can't be arsed going through the tonnes of threads and hotfixes, just leave it on Windows update and fuck off out for a few hours. Can take several hours before it starts finding updates, went through all of this a few months back formatting my mums laptop...nightmare.

Why not give Linux a go, you can install it on a VirtualBox virtual machine without changing anything on your 'proper' installation. You simply do not get any of these problems with Linux.

Did the new admin user thing, found some updates, left the computer to do its thing, it's been 5 hours now, some updates actually got downloaded and installed. So let's see about that. Thumbs Up

Linux, well if Teme was here, he would tell you why that is a stupid idea, in my case. Thumbs Up Laughing

Because Linux is a minority (amongst normal users) and specialist OS that most people don't have the time or patience to learn.

Yes, we get it, linux people are cool and DirectX is just pure marketing, with no benefits what so ever. Dance!

Learning to use Linux isn't difficult and it's nothing to do with being 'cool'. I use it because it works flawlessly and costs nothing. I use it both at home and professionally and can't think of a single thing I miss from Windows. That said I'm not into gaming.
