My understanding's bicycles with a small engine were mainly produced years ago (as cheap transport), but I'm wondering what the 'modern' equivalents are?

The Motoped looks like a lot of fun, but isn't a mainstream option: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M473J6H9fV8

Came across a Honda before but can't recall what its called Brick Wall

Can anyone think of any and any thoughts in general?

My thinking is that 250W, ~15mph electrically assisted pedal cycles are the new equivalent.

Anything with any sort of ICE needs registered, plated, VED, MOT, insurance, helmet and license. Once you add all that, you might as well have a 125 as anything smaller.

Perhaps the equivalent in spirit is a naughtily over-powered electric pedal cycle ridden without any of that bollocks. The mind boggles at how many laws you'd be breaking. Shocked

Good fun but illegal (on road), you can buy engine kits to mount to a bicycle that are single speed if your a lazy fuck but no wheelies like that.

Imagine people getting pissed off if you rode one on a mtb trail.

That's the problem I have with electric bikes, most of the time it's just you powering the bike, only on hills or into strong winds do you drop down to the assisted speed (assuming you're a good cyclist).

I've looked into this, inspired by a guy I saw put a motorcycle helmet on (which I thought was a bit OTT), then jump on his eBicycle and shoot off at a genuine 30 mph Smile

I believe the Bosch systems are easily de-restricted, and KTM do some nice electric bicycles (hideously expensive though). My main issue would be just the general ones with batteries, endless charging and degradation over time.

Who remembers when Woolworths used to sell Tomos mopeds?

I saw one of the new ones at Fraser's in Gloucester at the weekend. It was hidden under a blanket.

There still seem to be plenty of the ancient ones about, and spares for the Villiers engines seem quite plentiful too. Get one that is pre-1960 and not only do you not need to pay out for tax, but you don't need an MOT either. A few even come with girder forks for extra badassery.. If I lived just a few miles from work I would seriously consider one!

Not sure on the wheelie front though. Maybe the codgers who ride them just don't try?

In the UK, the legal limit is 250W (used to be lower but accepted because of EU bollocks), and a maximum unassisted speed of 15mph.

I own a Cyclotricity 1000W 12ah push bike. When unrestricted, which you do when stopped and having put in a button combination, (and off-road only of course), it goes 30mph just by holding a button down. If you pedal as well, it'll go 35+ on a flat.

It sets off faster than a moped and cars don't expect you to be going so fast and pull out on you. Just don't lend it to your mate who might try and wheelie it at the same time as holding the 'go' button down, the day after you bought it and flip it.

The downside: the battery is massive and looks stupid. In fact, I stopped using it because of how daft the battery looked.

Even better, build your own. If you know your electronics or have enough time to learn, some chap put an RFID chip on his bike so that when he was within 1M of it, it's >1000W, but if anyone else were to test ride it, it's only a 250W motor, and also all the batteries in the frame and in a bike bag at the back. You'd never know it was electric.

Pedaling on this scooter need to spread your legs widely. I can't imagine female rider on this.

well, it was quite a giggle to ride.

I got an indicated 42kmh out of it, with my feet on the running board and the pedals turning independently of me. Laughing

When I closed the throttle nothing happened, and it carried on, and I locked the back wheel up on a mini roundabout.

When I rode it back in the evening it was more sedate.

I had to pedal it, albeit it very, slowly hardly any effort at all to get it do 40kmh, otherwise it would do about 20.

But, no matter how fast I pedalled it wouldn't go over 42kmh.

Indicators make a beeping noise to remind me they are on, brake lights are nice and bright.

Random people shout at me about my lack of crash helmet.

Only realy draw back is that on my hybrid mountain push bike I can go faster.

As mentioned already, for it to be classed as a "bicycle" max allowed in UK is 250w motor that cuts out at 15mph. Should be pedal assist too and not throttle or button controlled, so motor only works when you're pedalling.

I had a Bionx electric assist wheel fitted to a cargobike. Once it was fitted on there it needed to be switched on to help cope with the extra weight it added to the bike! Worked well though for accelerating from standing and giving help when bike was loaded with 50kg of shopping on hills. It dropped in power at 15mph and cut out at about 16mph. Really annoying when you're riding it without cargo then suddenly hit 15mph and the bike suddenly feels really heavy to pedal! It kind of menat that the max realistic speed became not much over 20mph, whereas before it was fitted I'd regularly get up to 30mph on the flat.

There are supposedly codes you can input into the controller to derestrict it and of course you could always input the wrong wheel size into the controller to make it think it's going slower than it actually is.

If they were imported to the UK, and I thought I could register/insure it relatively easily I'd love to have one.
