I'm not too hot on what all the cool kids have. Any suggestions for a half decent 2nd hand mobile, up to £50? Is a Samsung Galaxy S2 the best I'll get for that?

Moto G are cheap as chips and supposed to be fine and dandy.
Worth looking at as you can get them with warranties for under £50.

You're not too far off the price of a Sony Z2 - would guess a tatty Z1 maybe.
I got a really good nick Z2 for just over £90 recently.
Very respectable camera (and does 4k video etc).

Cheap tramps use the Sony z2 so don't do that. Razz

Anyway, I like free stuff so here's a free phone that's free if you buy it with £10 of credit.

Doogee X6 Pro

5.5" screen, 4g, 16gb ROM will update to Android 6 when available. £50.00

Probably better than what is your main phone.

Amongst the family we have used Doogee phones, from the DG310 to X5 & X5 pro, and now I' ve got myself an X6 pro. Just waiting on a case to arrive.

Cheers

Tony

One of my mates recommended a Chinese phone that I'd never heard of, but once I investigated it seemed to have pretty good reviews. same with this, very tempting to try one out at that price. Thanks linuxyeti!

If it's a backup mobile phone then why does it have to be any good?
get the cheapest samsung one you can find, the battery lasts for weeks, you can text without looking at it (buttons) and can use it as a vibrating dildo if you type *#0*# and press 5.

Bike trips/London, places where it could get broken or stolen, but needs a good camera to capture those special moments with other men in leather Laughing

At the budget end, the camera is what always suffers the most.
Buy a shitty canon camera and a phone with a nice screen/cpu combo.
£50 for a phone with a decent camera is going to put you into shitty CPU/connectivity territory.

You can get a 4G chinese Android phone for £50 that has an HD screen and 'decent' CPU.
At that price range, something has to give, let it be the camera.

No idea on values, but I have an elderly nexus 5 which is still punching above its weight and is leagues ahead of the S2 it replaced in my life.

Yeah they are decent enough, but the connectivity will piss you off in no time.
There must be a decent cheap 4g phone with a camera, i just don't know of one.

How about the I9100M? They are hard to find and I've no idea on the costing of them, but they can't be that expensive.

I Hate using a phone camera.. unless it's for the equivalent of scanning in documents, which are automatically uploaded to dropbox, which I can the send onto insurance companies, or for things, like taking quick snaps of the meter reading before posting the reading.

If you want a decent put in your pocket camera, then try something like, a Sony HX-50 or 60, ~ 20MP, optical zoom of 30x. You can pick one up for around £50-60.00 second hand, decent image quality. I have one, that I almost always carry around, and use it when I've not got my DSLR with me.

See a review here https://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/reviews/compact-cameras/sony-cyber-shot-hx50-review

The only thing I'm not keen on is it doesn't have a view finder.

Here is a photo taken with my HX-50

https://aircraftpics.no-ip.org/Birmingham/20160429/slides/PH-EZD_EMB-190_KLM_1.jpg

There's no way a phone camera would get that.

Cheers

Suggests that some do sell for what you're looking for

And what's coming up

I replaced my S2 with an S5+ and ..... I struggle to get as constantly good photos on the S5 that I did on the S2.

When you're taking upskirt pics, you only get 1 chance to get it right Very Happy

From what I can tell, the Z2 uses the exact same sensor as that.

Appreciated the lens isn't going to up the same level both in general ability and zoom - but in a lot of conditions I expect very similar pictures will be seen - especially when it ends up a jpg on a website!

Hi

That may be the case, it still has the tiny camera lens, so even excluding the optical zoom, the quality of the photo is not going to match.

That's like saying a photo taken on the same Nikon DSLR using a Nikon 135mm f/2 AF-D Lens, will be the same as a photo taken with a Sigma 70-300mm lens, set at 135mm in the same lighting conditions will be the same as each other, afterall, it uses the exact same sensor !!

Add to that, I wouldn't call a Z2 particularly cheap.

My advice, if you want a spare phone to use as a camera, just buy a camera, such as the HX-50. If you want to use a phone to use as a phone, get a phone, but don't rely on it as a camera.

For the price of a Z2, the OP could get a HX-50, or equivalent, and a brand new Doogee X6Pro, and still have change left.
