Birthday is coming up soon and looking for a nice 125 bike to get.

Options pretty much are:
- Yamaha YZF R125
- Rieju RS3 125
But I'm open to any other suggestions.

It would mostly be used for commuting to work and college, on either Dual Carriageways or normal street roads depending on weather, it will also be taken out for occasional rides for fun, but wont be anything dangerous.

Wanted a YZF for ages now and been pushing my dad to help get me one, but he told me to look at the Rieju.

It does look nice and I have been looking at some reviews, but I'm not sure if its a decent buy due to parts and a lot of people having problems with the build quality.

Is it worth spending a bit more money on the YZF? Or is the Rieju RS3 better?

Aprilia RS4 125, can be bought similar price to the Reiju. the YZF is horribly overpriced. The Aprilia is Fuel injected too. The RS4 will always get more attention than the YZF as it is no where near as common.

Can you even find a used Rieju RS3? I can't. That means that you'll be buying new, and you won't know how much the "cheaper" bike will end up costing you to own. It could easily be more than the popular YZF.

All the good reviews are "just bought", "2 months", "4 months". Longer term owners report a laundry list of faults and being sodded off by dealers.

Is your dad offering to fix it for you every time it goes wrong? If not, forget it.

YZF or RS4 and don't forget the CBR125R. It's down a fraction on power, but we're talking a couple of mph at the top end - top speed will be more limited by how closely you hug the tank. It's not as popular as the YZF, but that means you should be able to get better deals on it both new and used.

I'd go for the RS4 125, they handle great and are just about the best looking 125 on the market (imo).
You can pick a low mileage one up for £2k.

I don't like the idea of a CBR as I feel its way too small and I'm about 6foot Confused
I went to a few local garages and most said they wouldn't work on any chinese or Aprilia bikes as they were awful to get parts for, so my dad ruled out Aprilia's after that
I had my suspicions about the Rieju being slighty less reliable than a YZF.
But we both think the CBR will be more reliable than any other, but still have the problem of feeling like I'm too big for it, and I don't like the look of it as much as the YZF

You'll bin both and knock the plastic bits off anyway. Why buy a new bike? get a decent second hand <insert unfaired 125 here> and spend the rest on your test.

Fair enough. If I trusted that they'd stick around this time (I don't) then I might incline my head slightly in the direction of the manly sizes Hyosung GT125R. Slightly. But that brings us to parts...

Check out cmpo.co.uk then tell me that parts are hard to get for Chinese made bikes. Not that I'd touch any of the "sports" ones, they're all just packing the same wheezy 10 or 11 hp CG or GN copy-engines as the commuters.

Aprilia, probably fair enough, but are Rieju much better? Plenty of salvage parts on eBay, which indicates that folk are breaking their bikes rather than fixing them. Thinking

YZF is probably your best bet. Yes, they're expensive, but they'll hold their value if you don't throw it down the road.

Or they don't mysteriously lose all their oil in under 300 miles, causing your engine to seize. Sad

I agree with Roger on getting a decent 125 for OP, that's proved to be OK for dealer and parts support. It does not necessarily have to be a brand new bike but either way for OP under the current test/licencing system a 10bhp Chinese bike in a sporty frock does not make the most of the regulations.

The thing with the Yams and Honda's is even though they are expensive 4-4.5k new (crazy price for a 125), they while losing a good chunk from new to used, still maintain a fairly healthy second hand value. You should get at least 2.5-2.8k for a mint 2year old YZF125R I would have thought?

Aprilia looks nice though for a four stroke pretender, and so does the Rieju too. Seeing as most engine bits are the same ad the Yamaha, then assuming there was a close by Rieju dealer, I'd not be put off I think.

Regardless OP should do the A1 test asap and ditch the L-plates. I think this takes away alot of the attention to the law of people on 125's, and would to me mean there's much less chance of being stopped.

On that basis I'd probably save up and get my 180cc big bore kit and the associated tuning parts fitted then, and enjoy and look after my 18-20bhp 125 for the two years until I'm allowed to do anything else on the incremental bullshit licensing ladder.

What parts would that be?
https://www.apriliapartsonline.co.uk/
https://www.apriliagenuineparts.co.uk/
https://www.wemoto.com/bikes/aprilia/

Seems to me, your localworkshop need to buy some internet connectivity.
The few items I ever ordered were with me 2-3 days later, I'm unsure how 'awful' that is to the trade, but it wasn't that bad for me.

Anyhow, if you're against the Aprilia for any reason, the YZF is the choice to go for, as Roger said, depreciation is negligible. The Rieju is not so good in that respect, which is why they get broken down. They are worth more in parts than as a whole bike. Not so with the YZF or the RS4, they command a nice price, mostly because they are sought after, but also because they are reliable.
