PostPosted: 20:11 - 18 May 2016    Post subject: A shop's strange helmet policy Reply with quote

I went into Tiffany's (Old Bond Street branch) to pick up a bracelet for the wife's birthday. I removed my helmet before setting foot in the place and proceeded to look for what I wanted. A security guard quickly approached me and said:

SG: "You can't bring that in here"
Me: "What? The helmet?"
SG "Yes, you can't bring that in here"
Me: "Why not? I'm not wearing it"
SG: "It's policy, you have to leave it over there" *points to corner of room*
Me: "I'm not letting it out of my sight, it's expensive and it might get damaged"
SG "It's policy, leave it over there"
Me "I'm not letting it out of my sight, why does it matter? There are people carrying bags around, how do you know they're not carrying helmets? Why would it even matter?"
SG: "It's policy, leave it over there"

*Manager arrives*

SG: "He won't put it down"
M: "You can't have that in here"
Me: "Why not?"
M: "It's policy"
Me: "What's the actual reason? I'm not actually wearing it"
M: "It's policy, you can leave it over there"
Me: "I don't want to leave it unattended, someone might knock or steal it"

I understand that they can have whatever policies they like, but it's a strange one that they themselves couldn't explain [the reasoning behind] - other people were free to roam around with back-packs / big shopping bags etc, but just carrying a helmet caused near-hysteria. I'm guessing they were worried I'd use it as a weapon or a glass-case smashing-device (which it'd actually be fairly useless at doing), someone would be far more likely to just use a hammer contained within one of their many bags.

Under normal circumstances I would've voted with my feet and gone elsewhere, but it was a specific item I wanted (well, my wife wanted), so we ended up agreeing to a compromise of leaving it on a chair whilst the manager personally stood watch next to it for the duration (whilst I was getting what I wanted) - strange way to want to spend her time.

Strool Bory Crow.
TL:DR - bought some overpriced sh1t.

Probably cos they think you might be part of a ped boi smash and grab gang.

I expect that if someone had a big back-pack or big shopping bags then the security guard would ask them to put their bags over there *points to corner of room*.

Tiffany is shite.
It's like Burberry, for chavs.

You get proper jewellery at Van Cleef or Asprey.

There's one (I avoid) that want you to either pay first or turn your bike around so they can see the plate Eh?

Also don't understand how you're meant to pay first if you're using a fuel card (is that even possible)?

They'd probably be happy if you left a £20 deposit, filled up and _then_ paid by fuel card and got your deposit back. Maybe they should just install pay-at-pump facilities if it's that much of a problem for them.

I remember an occasion at a Shell petrol station on the A127 in Southend, I used to fill up there fairly regularly, so pulled in and filled up as usual (I guess he authorised the pump because he recognised me) - at the same time another car pulled in and the cashier tannoyed 'pump 2, can you pay first' - the guy proceeded to have a full-on meltdown, screaming "Do I look like a thief? How come you let HIM fill up without paying?" and so on - even after pre-paying he continued to shout at the kiosk whilst filling up. (He _was_ wearing a track suit though, so kinda deserved it)

See a lot of those in the UK, do we?

It's a genuine question. This comes up every time we veer into a petrol station thread, dat's well discriminate, dat is, but being a biker isn't a protected characteristic. Being a mahometan is.

So if you can go out and find an actual female (or female-identifying) mahometan who will agree to niqab up and then scream islamophobia and eye-rape at a petrol station, please do so.
