Twice a year, every year, my uncle organises a bike trip in Scotland for a big group of us. It’s a nice group with a wide range of ages, bikes and riding styles (read: some are FAST and some like to pootle) which is ideal as you can sort of pick and choose who you ride with depending on how you’re feeling at any given time. The guys at the front are great to follow if they’re going steady as they’re such good riders – they’ve been riding for thirty-plus years with all sorts of racing experience between them - but they are fecking demonic most of the time and I find trying to keep them in sight for more than a couple of bends to be thoroughly stressful and I usually throw in the towel within about ten seconds
This year we were based in Fort William on night one having ridden there via Blairgowrie, Dunkeld, the Sma Glen to Aberfeldy, Loch Tay, Killin, Tyndrum and Glen Coe. Great roads and gorgeous weather.
On day two, the plan was to head to Skye via the Mallaig ferry which most of the group did but unfortunately one of my friends picked up a dirty great piece of metalwork in the rear hoop of his GS and so the two of us ended up on a mission to get that repaired. Fort William had nothing to offer (the car garages wouldn’t touch it) so we went to Oban, a 90 mile round trip from our base, to meet with a lovely chap who operates out of a tiny garage there. Ultimately he couldn’t help us but he did everything possible to see us right including calling his mates who worked in local bike shops to see if they’d pop in to open the shop to help us. Sadly, none of them were feeling as helpful as he was…
So, from Oban we went to Inverness to a large dealer who had agreed (after much discussion and persuasion) to squeeze us in. They got a new tyre on but they were total arseholes – rude, very unfriendly and robbed us blind. However, the tyre was on and we got out of there. We missed out on Skye and ended up doing double the mileage of everyone else that day with a gubbed tyre...
The second night, we stayed in Drumnadrochit. The day’s riding was lovely – quiet roads, great weather and some stunning scenery along the A887 and A87 towards Kyle of Lochalsh where we eventually met the others.
Day three and time to head home. Back to Dundee via Fort Augustus, Spean Bridge, Laggan, Pitlochry and Bridge of Cally via the Moulin road which is absolutely mental.
The Triton you can see in the pictures is absolutely battered, but cool as. It was two-up the entire trip and received a huge amount of attention wherever we went.
730 miles all in, great weekend, very tiring!
Cheers
