Hi guys,

I have a semi auto. Therefore no clutch or brake on the left handle bar.

While riding ive noticed i pretend to pull in/out the left lever 3 or four times quickly. Just to get stretch the left hand.

I have only started riding long distance of 28miles (14miles each way) for the last 3 days.

Ok main point: i seem to be getting some pain in the left hand.
Its mainly around the 3 knuckles from and including the pinky finger. The pain is also alot on midele finger on bone join the knuckle and the midpoint of the finger.

Has anyone experiencienced this and know anything i can do to avoid having the pain?

Stop wanking so much? Or wank more to build up the strength?

Talk to your GP rather than a forum of randoms might be a good start, you'll end up with 50 different answers from 50 different people here. There's too many factors.

Relax your grip.

When I first started driving long distance I found my hands aching, and it was down to holding the steering wheel too tight.

You really only need rest the palm of your hand on it even if there are controls there. That shouldn't cause any problems unless you already have an injury or stress effect e.g. always use that hand on computer mouse for hours.

As above, try to relax your grip to begin with, you really don't need to be gripping the bars much at all.

It could be that you're starting to get tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome. I suffer from it but they say I'm too young to have the operation at the moment. Try taking two ibuprofen before a ride to see if that helps. Your tendons won't swell up so much then.

Failing that, might be that you just need to build some strength up in your hand muscles if you're not used to using them much.

I hope not for the OP. Had it for more than 2 years now, from work but I don't think having a vibey motorcycle with a 'wrist breaker' throttle helped. Also it started heading into my first winter on a bike. Getting a bit off topic but what operation? I got shown some wanky exercises which achieved nothing, and that was it. How old are you btw?

For the OP, maybe have a short break from riding if you can? Sometimes little pains go, sounds stupid but my thumb started really hurting from using the indicators (and that went), sometimes they don't and you can be left with a really annoying aliment.

Good points about holding the bars too tight, can be a tricky habit to get out of, but tbh if you were holding on too tight I'd expect it to be more of an issue with your throttle hand.

Thanks guys - think it makes sense that i need to relax my grip.
The point about building strength probably sounds right because i am right handed and my left hand is weak because i dont really use it.

I wont conclude to it being tendonitis as yet - but will keep it in mind if it continues to happen for too long.

Also took some ibuprofen seems to have eased the pain nicely Very Happy

Short fingers? Fat grips? If so, change at least one of the above.

That also is true - maybe my glove sizing is wrong. I am using size Small for some frank thomas summer gloves and XS for winter WP RST blade gloves.

I did wear my thermal inner gloves and then my summer Small gloves on top and it did feel very tight.

Re: Questions above...

I'm 25 now, quite young to be suffering from this but it runs in the family and the docs have confirmed it as carpal tunnel. The operation as far as I'm aware involves cutting the hand / wrist open and opening up the tunnel where the tendons and nerves pass through into the hand. They don't like to operate until your hand is pretty much immobile.

Powerball is an excellent suggestion, brilliant for increasing grip and building strength in the hands and forearms. Glad the ibuprofen helped too, don't rely on them too much.
