Having had our bathroom re-fitted I've noticed something weird, we've got white tiles, white ceiling, all the units are white. Only colour is wood effect floor tiles and dark wood bog seat, but when we fill the roll-top bath with plain tap water it appears to be a pale blue colour. I can't figure it out, is it an optical illusion or some strange reflection effect.
One for the BCF physicists I think.

Nope, same effect by daylight alone or artificial light.

Water IS actually very slightly blue. Just not that blue.

I'd suggest it might just be soluable copper salts out of the pipes though. Especially if they were soldered joints because any flux that gets into the pipes is mildly corrosive.

I was always under the impression that the only reason we see water as blue is due to light bending through it.

edit: & what MarJay said.

I think you may be right, new pipes were soldered in.

Clearly it's just full of cold water. Add some hot water if you want it more red. A 50/50 mix of hot and cold will make a nice purple colour.

We usually see it as blue because the sky is reflected in it.

The sky is blue due to refracted light.

Water can also contain particulates that refract the blue colour.

Water itself IS slightly blue though. It absorbs red light very slightly.

I can't decide whether to feel sorry for you because you can't afford a roof over your bathroom, or jealous because you've got a convertible roof! Laughing

Flush the system through and everything should be fine. This should of been done already as the flux can damage pipework.

'tis true. If you do a scuba course that has a deep water section (below 25metres) they take colour flash cards down and show you the difference with and without torch light. Blues are still blue, reds appear almost black.
