As per title, I need some advice regarding buying a 2003 Daytona. I really like the looks of the bike and from what i read online, it seems like it's got a pretty good chassis. The things is, I don't know how reliable they are. Looks wise, I think it's the best looking sports bike for the year, but that means nothing if I have to keep tinkering with it to keep it going. So, if any of you have owned one, or know someone who did, or just know of notorious issues with this bike, please let me know. There's plenty of jap bikes which I could get, instead of the Daytona, but this is the one I like best, bang for buck. So boys, yay or nay?

Cheers,
Gab

I have one.

However I have only done about 1000 miles on it so far so can't comment on reliability.
The only problem I have had was on our recent Euro trip. The wheel bearings decided to collapse Sad . This was down to the wheel being heavily overtightened by a tyre monkey a week before however. So not the bike's fault.

Didn't the replacement also lunch itself?

I love those with the British flag on the front. Friend had a yellow one, looked the mutts nuts.

Yes Roger, the replacement also died. This time in Spain.
Here she is, spending the bank holiday in the Zaragoza showroom.

Aaaaaaaaand that one has now since died back in the UK.
Fairly sure the inner spacer got squished and now eats bearings for breakfast. Got it booked in to be repaired (for good) in a couple of weeks.

Had a 2004 one, nothing major to report. It was fine, it wasn't brutally quick but I made do. It got very warm and it didn't like keeping oil in the top end, the gasket was fairly shit. They are a weird gasket also..

OK, to make things easier (for me, ofc), would you recommend me buying one or should I look for a japanese one?

That is up to you.
It is just as fast as any of the Japanese 600's and handles just as good from my experience.
And in my opinion it's better looking than most, and gets more attention because Triumph.

Guess it depends on what you want out of it.

In my experience, the japs just did it slightly better, looks wise in 2003 though, nothing compared to the Triumph. GSXR600 still looked like a fat sister, the 'Ninja' had 2 wanky eyes and an open mouth and the CBR600 was just a softy, the RR was different but thats more go-race-go.

I tend to agree with you Paddy.
I wouldn't choose it for a track bike, but for the road it's just as capable as the Japs

Guys, I don't care much about track times, as an overall bike, is it worth having? My main concern is the reliability, not performance stats, I'm sure the bike is a lot more capable than me anyway.

There are no known issues with reliability, as far as I know, and the engine is the same as that in the Speed Four and the older TT600 (albeit with a few updates).

However, it would all depend on whether you buy one that has been looked after I'd say.

Pretty much the same applies with every second hand bike.

And depending on where you live, parts could be an issue. Parts aren't exactly hard to come by for it, but you will always find parts for the Japs easier.

Unfortunately, as always, life happened and my budget just got halved. So I will have to settle for a 2001 ZX6R for now, and hope that eventually, I will get my hands on a Daytona. Oh well.. Rolling Eyes

BTW, I'm going to see the ZX6R tomorrow morning, anything in particular I should be watching for? It looks pretty good in the pics, but it is a 15yo bike afterall..

It's been a while, but tomorrow I'm going to see a red 2004 Daytona. Sold the Ninja, and if everything checks out, gonna get the Daytona tomorrow. Fingers crossed! Anything in particular I should be checking? The seller sent me a video of the bike start and running, everything sounds good so far, but you never can really tell until you see it in flesh and bones. Or plastic and metal.

twas a complete dog, there was not a bodywork panel intact and also a piece of shit from the mechanical POV. Ended up with a 2000 R6, for the same money, but in really good condition and all original, no mods at all. I still lust for a Daytona, but for the time being, I'll be happy with my R6.

Excellent, we can have a sweepstake on how long it takes to eat it's own liners Wink

Ironic buying an R6 from this era when you ere worried about generic issues and reliability.

It is own liners what?

I'd actually be suspicious of a 17 year old R6 that hasn't been Barried out the wazoo. It's like finding a virgin in Yorkshire.

Thought is was pretty self explanatory. Maybe loses something in translation crossing the border?
