I need some advice. I need a new laptop and have a budget of around 500 ponds.

I would like it to be one of the flip screen touched ones.

Requirements are that it's light and has a decent battery.

I'm mainly a low power user, Internet, word processing etc but I am going to uni in October and may need to do some graphics work - photoshop etc.

My electronics brand of choice is Samsung and I would like it to be viable for 3 years plus...

Any thoughts?

At £500 you are firmly in Surface 3 territory, and stuck with an Atom CPU. If you double it, you are spoilt for choice of nicer, more usable (in the real world) type devices.

Was a flip and touchscreen?
Was it able to do everything in a timely manner?

Have a gander at these, but for the money you can get a non-touchscreen non flipscreen laptop that will last 3+yrs

One laptop for each of her threads asking for laptop recommendations. Razz

13", 15" or 17" screen?

As others have said, you're not going to get a touch or flip screen on a laptop for £500 unless the rest of the laptop is a POS. As you want to do some photoshopping on the laptop, forget about it having a touch screen of flip screen.

I think one of those tablet ones would be too tempting to watch films on instead of doing uni work, also think they are shitter than normal laptops -battery life.

you could build a pretty dank PC for that money too, what notes can you take in a lecture about design anyway? wouldn't be a lot, trust me, I'm full of nolege.

I deleted the two spurious threads

/janitor

Get a desktop PC and a tablet because:

a) Do you REALLY want to sit doing photoshop on a laptop?

and

b) When someone steals, breaks, spills a pint on or otherwise renders your laptop inoperable at uni, you'll wish you'd just used a cheap tablet.

I have not had a desktop since 2011, they simply don't work for me or my lifestyle. Hence laptop...

Flip screen is a like rather than a requirement. I will have a look at the provided links Smile

As for spec, I have no idea what I am looking for, I don't understand what things mean anymore

Apologies for multi thread... I'm on mobile and didn't realise

University lectures aren't particularly good places to do lectures notes on a laptop, they're too "in the way". A bound pad costing £2 is more flexible for content, and lectures are supposed to be for notes rather than verbatim copying. As for Photoshop, there will be labs you can do that stuff in. Bournemouth Uni for example has loads of these art/design mac filled rooms with huge screens for that stuff as will all similar Unis.

The main benefit of a laptop in Uni is to do work in a library if there are insufficient desktops available. There are other reasons but they only really apply to people doing subjects like CS or EE.

Personally I'd say get a 13" or 14" laptop for about £100 to £150, and a £40 tablet. You'll only genuinely need the laptop near deadlines when the library gets packed. A 7" tablet you can take with you and won't weigh you down. Also with the pads, don't use one for each module, it will be too heavy. Just use one pad until its full Wink

I got my housemates onto it and have found a decent spec laptop for £539 after cashback it's not a flip screen, but tbh that's probably a good thing...

I really like the tablet for lectures idea anyway, in combination with pen and paper of course!

They are more "workshops" rather than lectures anyway

In case you get the urge, whatever you do, don't touch Dell Venues. We've got 1000 of them in the Trust, and are constantly reimaging/rebuilding/returning them.
