When I bought my helmet i bought a pin lock for it at the same time and the chap fitted it for me at no extra cost (very kind of him - Race leathers in Darwen)

since then I've taken it all out and apart to clean and now it just rattles around between the two pins doing very little

how do you fit it so that it stays in one place?

The pins are not pins and are small cams so they may need repositioning so it bends the pinlock into a fitting position. It's recommended to remove the pins to do this but has been done with them in situ

Get a flat screwdriver and adjust the pins. By turning the pins they adjust the space and tighten the pinlock insert.

You may need new pins if the old ones are worn.

Usually pinlocks come with spare pins

You can also bend the visor to help, it takes a surprising amount of force to break it.
