PostPosted: 09:52 - 27 May 2016    Post subject: Defective Car Headlights Reply with quote

Travelling around Colchester last night and back via the A12 I noticed so many cars with one headlight defective, dimmed or completely out. Its something that's become increasingly common from what I can gather and I was just wondering whether there was a paticular reason for this. Is it just crap quality bulbs that people are using or something to do with the high output from newer bulbs not being suitable?

Probably cheapo North Korean bulbs from eGay or Halfrauds. Usually you see cars like that in winter time, strange to see so many now the weathers warming up.

You see a lot of bikes like that too Thinking Razz Rolling Eyes Mr. Green

it gets like that this time of year, not sure why... im going to say the extra heat where the atmosphere warms up kills the bulbs faster.

and the heat makes people lazy so they would rather look like a biker, use full beam or use their fog lights instead of changing them.

Few drivers realise that they have the lights on so a bulb out will be completely ignored until the mot. Added to that is the fact that a good number of cars require a strip down to change the bulb.

A more logical reason for seeing more now is that you'll hardly use them if mostly on a normal daytime commute - easy to not be aware one is out or put off changing it as hardly used.

In winter they are needed both ends of the day so you are going to notice.

This is something I actually check before I buy a car now.

^^^ You're not wrong. Even on some older cars, you need the hands of a newborn baby to get access to some of the areas behind the headlight assembly to change bulbs.

a few years ago I had a Picanto (the brats were learning to drive) and the bulb went so bought a pair, popped the bonnet, hummed and hawed, looked on the kia forums only to see a picanto with the front end completely disassembled, and the poster saying "it's easier the second time" Needless to say I wasn't going down that route, managed to unbolt the headlights in situ and move them enough to get the bulbs out/in. Still not the 30second job it should be Evil or Very Mad

Designers eh?

Is does make me laugh that parts of Le Europe require you to carry a complete bulb kit even if you need a workshop to change them.

I may be wrong (it happens) but haven't Ze EU mandated that bulbs (car and I think bike now as well) have to be changeable at the roadside without tools? If so (and it may not be so) it'll still take quite some time before all the no-changums are off the road.

I think it's the newer cars that are a problem. My honda accord would require a football floodlight and a decent sized toolkit to change the bulbs back and front. Never remember this on old cars.

Hence the reason they are all electronic now, as you can't do anything mechanical to them! Rolling Eyes They just leave enough room to get a plug in. Twisted Evil

On my mondeo it was about a 10 minute job. On the Polo same again .

On the Zafira it took me an hour.

Most people these days have zero practical skills to the point they boast about having none. I am the only person on my street who can and does service their car.

You can actually pay in Hanford and book an appointment to have a wiper blade changed. Never mind a headlight.

No mater what a bastxrd I will always change my light bulbs and if the bumper has to come off then so be it.

Technically speaking they made the engine bays too small so there's more cabin space.

In what was then a 12 year old chassis design I went from a 1L engine to a 1.4L from a 3 year old car. Despite the donor car being almost 1m longer the car needed to be lifted over the engine and took about 2 hours to unbolt/extract the engine & gearbox from the chassis. The same engine with nothing done to it out of the car was lowered into the engine bay of the older car with the bonnet still attached and took about 25 minutes to get it properly mounted with just electronics to sort out. Half the time taken was working out the combination of mounts needed to get the engine in the correct position.

As well as it being a bitch to change many cars' bulbs these days, I think it's also due to bulbs and reflectors being much better now. When I started driving in 70s and 80s cars, you needed both tiny candles working to see where the hell you were going at all, and if you wanted to go quickly, you strapped on extra "rally" lights. Now, one bulb puts out enough for the average idiot cager to not notice the loss, at least for the 2 cars' lengths ahead they're looking.
