As it is getting to the BBQ season, I need to replenish my stocks of the black stuff. A few years ago I switched from the unsustainably sourced foreign stuff found everywhere to a much more eco friendly british mixed hardwood charcoal from managed woodlands (coppicing). The flavour added to the food is far superior, it is much easier to light, gets up to temperature quicker and burns hotter, meaning a greater searing of the outside of a steak, whilst leaving the inside bloody enough to be a good medium rare.
The problem now, however, is that having moved house a few months ago, there is no where local that I can find that stocks british charcoal. I'm not massively averse to mail ordering it, but I'd much rather buy it locally from local woodland. Anyone in/around the York area know of anywhere I can purchase my BBQ supplies? Or failing that, recommend a decent online supplier? (I know I could google online supplier, I'm after a recommendation of the ones out there).
As an added perk, I read once (granted, on a charcoal producers website) that around 40,000ha of ancient british woodland would be much better cared for if half of the UKs bbq charcoal was from sustainable british sources. That can only be a good thing, surely. ____________________ 1977 Honda CG125
