Well at last, i got my bike running again.

Carburettor Problems on all 4 of the buggers Neutral

Anyway as you probably know one of the mixture screws snapped in the body of the carb Evil or Very Mad but i managed to get the point out and get a second hand one from the breakers.

This may sound stupid but to clean them i boiled each carb in water for 20mins,then i put them in the dishwasher on the power cycle and they came out spotless.
I put them all back together with very few probs but the thing that is worrying me is i put all the mixture screws back to book settings (2.5 turns) but before that they was all over the place as in one was 2 turns out and one was nearly 3.5 turns out, anyway it should be ok on the book setting?

I await your comments Thumbs Up

Jon

How did you get the screw out?

I have a similar problem of the screw head being mashed.

It's the mixture screw, seems the previous owner decided it was loose & screwed it right down, got told "its not supposed to be like that" and mashed the head trying to get it out. I expect he then took the air filter out to try and compensate for the wrong setting!

I've tried hammering a new screwdriver into the screw and turning, and also recreating some sort of groove with a drill. Had no luck though Sad Don't want to drill too far down, as I could damage the carb - or get small filings in it which find their way into the engine.

You can see the brass screw in the middle of the photo.

can you get a torx bit in there? if you can, then have a go at hammering it in to the head of the screw then put it in the screwdriver and twist with a lot of weight on it to keep it on the screw, it should work Rolling Eyes

DONT DRILL IT!

Cheers! I'll give it a try.

Tried doing a similar thing, but just with a normal screwdriver and mallet.

Got a friend who's dad works for an engeneering firm - apparantly he has a clever idea on how to get it out too! All is not lost.

Craggles: the way I would get that out would be to drill a fine pilot hole down the middle, not all the way through. I would do this using a HAND drill with a greased drill bit to catch any swarf, wipe the bit and reapply grease as the swarf builds up. Wash out with solvent after (a 'blast' of butane lighter refill does this very well but carefull of naked flames)

I would then ideally use a fine EZ out (a conical, reverse threaded tap) to extract it. If I didn't have an EZ out I would use a torx bit and GENTLY tap it in then unscrew it. You have to be very carefull to avoid damaging the alloy as it will deform easily.

JonRisby: It should in theory be fine with the book setting. If you are worried that the mixture may be incorrect or different for each pot due to wear, the ideal thing would be to buy/borrow a colourtune plug. These have a see-through top that allows you to set the mixture by looking directly into the combustion chamber as the engine is running and adjusting the mix until you see the correct colour flame.

Alternativley, you could clean all the plugs, let the bike tick-over for a while then check the colour of the electrodes. Make small adjustments as necessary then repeat untill all the electrodes come out a uniform light brown colour.
