What's the going rate (labour) for a painter / decorator these days (outside London)?

Like most trades, £150-250 day rate for an average Joe and more if you want something complicated.

both times he went onto another job afterwards

Thanks for the replies - ringing them up and asking only tells me how much they charge, not what I should be paying. They might be ripping me off, they might be really cheap (and possibly crap).

Anyway, £160/day seems to fit into the range mentioned. 3 weeks work, so not cheap.

??..so you'd trust prices given by members of a motorcycle forum over ringing 3 or 4 up yourself and getting genuine figures from actual decorators?

Interesting Shocked

I'm a property developer, and a motorcyclist. I occasionally employ other trades. But I do baulk at paying painters.
Plasterers are my most commonly hired tradesmen because I can't do that myself. My plasterer works for me for 80
quid a day plus his train ticket up from London.

I'd trust a number of people here, who have each probably rung 3-4 painters, plus those I have called directly, to give me a reasonable indication of the market.

£150 per day is not uncommon in these parts, the problem is finding a good one. Paying somebody to do a job to the same quality that you could do yourself is something I would not want to do.

Surely he'd be better off getting a full time minimum wage job than the hassle and costs of running a business and making maybe 50 quid a day.
