Went on a last-minute trip to South Wales last weekend with Pigeon, arry, Silver_Fox and his other half.

We had originally got time off and booked a trip to France and Belgium with Chickenstrip and his mate, but we bailed out last minute because of all the strike-disruption going on over there at the moment, due to worrying we might not get back in time for work if things escalated. From the sounds of it things over there actually weren’t too much of a problem in the end besides the weather, but we made an effort to make the most of the time still.

We stayed at Erwlon campsite in Llandovery just up the road from the West End Cafe, which was amazing value at £6 per night. Would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in camping in the area. We had some problems on one booking, another person turned up later after booking the same day and then we all were booking additional nights on a daily basis as-and-when we decided to extend the trip – all of which they were fine about. They also seemed very biker friendly; the owner came out saying it was fine to ride up to our spot when some of the group arrived at 11pm on the second night and despite them politely turning off the bike and pushing it to our camping spot, the owners wife even bothered to come out to say it was fine to ride through the site. Very welcoming.

[size=0]Friday

Met up with Pigeon at Severn view services and took a fairly direct route to the camp site. Arry left a bit later in the morning, having had to buy a tent just before he left. As it turned out, despite us leaving much earlier, me and Pigeon had a little bit of a break at Seven view and then his sat-nav accidently lead us on a little detour up and down the A40 multiple times, past the same speed camera van Laughing. By the time we arrived Arry had rolled up too. We quickly pitched up and just avoided the horrific rain-storm that followed, through the night. Cue flooded walk to the pub and getting drenched despite waterproof jackets. Much cold and wetness.

Saturday
Went over to Fishguard through Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
A482 to Lampeter.
A475 to Llandyfriog.
A484 to Cardigan.
Pen Y Rhiw to Molygrove.
To Newport and the A487 to Fishguard.
Then back on the A40.

Woke up to find the river at the bottom of the campsite; a whole 5 metres from ours tents and bikes had risen rather dramatically during the night and was less than a foot away from flooding us and all our possessions away to a watery death Thinking, thankfully it subsided quite rapidly during the day.

Kitted up and set off on the bikes, still not quite sure what the weather was doing, hoping for the best.

Arrived in Fishguard and had a look around the fort.

https://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag227/bcfeurojolly2014/south%20wales/a%2015_zpspudcac1y.jpg

Took the slightly more direct route home as it briefly pissed it down for half the journey and went back into Llandovery in the evening until Silver_Fox and other half turned up around midnight.

Sunday
Long country and coastal route to Devil’s Bridge and onto Elan Valley.
A482 to Abraeron.
A487 to Southgate.
A4120 to Devils Bridge.
A4120 to B4343 to A44 Llangruig.
A470 to Rhayader to Ellan Valley.

Had breakfast at West End Cafe. Whilst sweating buckets. The weather had definitely improved, but was now blazing hot.
https://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag227/bcfeurojolly2014/south%20wales/a%2017_zpszcnayamh.jpg

Continued on towards Devil’s Bridge on a route we planned via lots of windy country roads.
https://i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag227/bcfeurojolly2014/south%20wales/a%2018_zpsqz0mby5e.jpg

Until 5 minutes later when Pigeon began punching himself, swerving all over the road and waving his arms about. Turned out he was violently assaulted by a Bee. After a brief stop, we continued on.

Was cool that you and Sam were able to make it mate - great to meet you both Thumbs Up

My thanks go to Matt, Pigeon, Chickenstrip and everyone involved in organising the Belgium trip. Even though it didn't happen for most of us, having people so keen to source routes and places to stay, work out travel arrangements etc was a great help and it was really appreciated - I'd have never have made it on a tour at all if t wasn't for you guys being so helpful up front, so a big Thumbs Up from me.

Mate it was so last minute that I booked the campsite for everyone whilst still sitting at work ~20:30 the night before, and had to get everything re-packed when I got home to fit around a tent that I'd not even bought yet, then went out at 8:30 the day afterwards to buy a tent, fit it into the equation and then got on my travels Laughing

I'm really pleased I got to go and thanks to Matt and Pigeon for having me along. Started the weekend wobbling around at the back as I've not ridden much for near a couple of years now thanks to a fairly serious shoulder injury; ended the weekend blasting down the twisties into the Elan Valley and hacking across the the A40 at pace - confidence on the bike at an all time high and I really benefited from being able to follow the guys for a couple of days and re-learn proper bike lines.

I'll upload my (limited) pictures later Smile

Great writeup Matt, lovin' the onboard pics too. Really going to have to start doing that to fire the memory banks on a cold and wet winters evening.

You're going to have to forgive my gushing (or not read it), I do want to thank you all. Especially for turning immense disappointment and frustration into proper good times!

Matt - Your instincts on these things are always spot on, either before or when on the road. You're always in tune with the trip if that makes sense. Always looking for the giggle, and dude can ride a bike!!

Arry - A proper monster effort, from organising the site (which was thoroughly excellent!), buying your own gear on the day, but particularly because of a busted shoulder + ribs / muscles and hustling the 1050. A lesser man (or a man with more sense Wink )would have not been up for the idea, let alone cracking on. Very much enjoyed your company and stories Smile
And your itinerary!! Just brilliant!!!

Lyndon + Sam. Have to include you as a couple, because together you are definitely an unstoppable force! Riding a bike + being a pillion, both carrying gear for 5 hours, riding through the rain and welsh valleys at night. Fuck. That. Shit! Laughing
Balls & Ovaries of steel! Lovely people and hilarious with it.
Looking forward to seeing Sam on her Panigale next time and Lyndon on his Desmo.

Many highlights, from Friday's drenching (in more ways than one), to the various attractions and views around Fishguard, the best fish & chips I've ever had. The late night arrivals (you had us a little worried), bee-ing a magnet to wildlife, to the lairy overtakes, the hotel and girl from Dust Till Dawn, the pulled pork, the views, the glorious sunshine, the lack of caravans, the drunken laughs, unhurried brews, late night steamy meetings.
The great value. £6/night is crazy!

But my biggest highlight was the Sunday blast home to the camp. Not just because it was ludicrous fun, but because every single person was buzzing their tits off and smiling ear to ear when we got back. I loved that.
Arry definitely re-discovered his mojo on the A470 and A483 Very Happy

So yeah, thanks for putting up with my weird ways and hopefully you'll humour me some more and allow me to come along to the next outing. Smile

On his first day back to work, Arry said something about needing a drinking buddy at lunchtime to get through the afternoon. I proper laughed at the time.......until my return to work on Wednesday. Fuck me that was brutal, so utterly and completely depressing.

Thankfully Matt's writeup has put a smile on my face again.

Same again lady & gents. Soon as you can please Smile

Good to see you had some nice weather. Thumbs Up

Wish I could have been there too tbh. Fed up of not being able to get out on the bike at present. Sad The last proper trip I did was the Ireland one and I think my rucksack is still drying out from that one. Laughing

Hopefully, I'll be sorted before summer goes away again for another year.
