 Posted: 21:48 - 02 Jun 2016 Post subject: K6 GSXR600 Reg/Rec Issue |
 |
|
Recently picked up my K6 GSXR600 and have heard a number of times that this model suffers from the Reg/Rec burning out.
The guy I bought the bike off told me he had the problem occur and he had a new unit fitted.
So how can I prevent his happening again? I've heard and seen on YouTube that people relocate the unit. Is this safe? Are there any side effects to doing this? Is there a recommended location to move the unit to?
Thanks in advanced for the advice
Ps. Any other hints/tips/heads ups about this bike welcome! ____________________ GSXR 600 K6 - Stolen

Reg/revs are designed to run hot and there aren't many places on a bike which aren't exposed to the breeze. If the reg/rec has started to struggle then repositioning for maximum cooling is probably just allowing the rest of the charging system to malfunction and letting the reg/rec take the consequences. That can't last.
I'd fit a Mosfet reg/rec if it hasn't already got one. They are more efficient to start with. I'd also clean up or replace the charging system connectors with high quality ones, and where possible shorten the leads and run the reg/rec direct to the battery terminals instead of via the loom. Worked a treat on my R1 using Eastern Beaver products.
Also bear in mind that any under-performing component of the charging system can stress its neighbour, so if you're repeatedly having to buy yet another new reg/rec it's probably because connectors are dirty/corroded or the battery or alternator/generator are weak. Most rec/reg problems come down to two things
Bike in daily use
Rec/reg will get hot ensure the heat path to the frame is good and as much as possible it is in cool air preferably moving cool air
Bike in weekend or less use
The above +
Be very careful of battery condition a poorly battery can kill rec/reg ____________________ Dave

thanks all for the replies..
The bike is my daily commuter and weekend hoon all wrapped into one. Therefore I'm guessing I'm more likely to see the Reg/Rec fail on me despite it being newly fitted recently.
I'll be ordering a Mosfet unit as a pre-emptive measure for when it does go wrong.
thanks again ____________________ GSXR 600 K6 - Stolen

It's a common issue on the K6/7 600/750's. They over heat because they're badly positioned. I believe the K8 onwards GSXR's we're recalled for their rectifiers.
If you have FB, join the GSXR Owners UK page, post there and you'll get a lot of suggestions of what to do and photos of where and how people have repositioned there's. I believe a common one is using a tax discs to reposition it to the side of the bike (so it sits flush with your side fairing).
He's how my brothers one looked on his K6 750, it actually went into a small flame.

I replaced the above for my brother and it's easy to do tbf.
Tank up, airbox off, then it's just a matter of unplugging and unbolting the rectifier. |
