I'm posting under a different account to the usual as my boy reads BCF now and again and i don't want to raise hopes unnecessarily and/or spoil the surprise.

So, I'm thinking of giving him a day at a wheelie school for his birthday and wondered if anyone here has any experience with them, or recommendations or even horror stories about the schools out there?

Had a little look around and iwanttowheelie.co.uk is my preference atm. We're in the south east btw, but distance within reason isn't a big issue as the ride there will be part of the fun.

Would love to join in with him on the day, but they all seem to be around the 200 quid per rider mark, and i don't think i can really afford both of us. Although, that said, fuck the overdraft....

So, yeah. Good idea, or better spend the 400 on some fucked but running Bandit 12 and a first aid kit, and then just find a field somewhere...?

Thanks!

and a shorter one here from the year before;

I'd go for the cheap/existing bike and get to an out of the way industrial estate.

This was written for an SV, but basics are the same for others: https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=96113

Thanks guys.

@ Hammers I did do a search and found the first one but was hoping for a bit more information (and fresher) than what was there, but thanks anyway!

@ G Handy write up and I guess the basic principles apply to almost all bikes. My only worry with the DIY approach is it could be a really shit day if the bike decided to breakdown or blow up or something, or even not being able to find somewhere to do it, or worrying the whole time about someone calling the old bill, or getting chased off someone's field. You know what farmers are like...it's all 'ruining my crops! this and 'killing my sheep' that....

Just thought too, I've no way of getting a bike there so it'd have to be road legal, which would mean a more expensive bike. Hmm, don't know.

The only thing I'd say about a wheelie school is don't expect to be able to come away at the end of it and be able to pull a wheelie.

Reason I say that is it took me 3 years to learn to wheelie properly, I literally went out and popped the clutch on every straight bit of road and got a feeling for it for 3 years before I could 'wheelie on tap'

It's a good idea, it might get you 'feeling' the bike by the time you come away, but if you want to pull any half decent wheelies you won't be able to do it in a day.

It's a good idea as a busy present though mate.

This is true. I did a wheelie school... it rained in the afternoon and I left not being able to wheelie. It wasn't a bad school, I just had some bad luck.

I did this one as starting on a quad appealed to me. It worked, and I was able to wheelie the quad quite nicely. I just kept spinning up the rear on the Fazers they used in the afternoon:

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

i did the stunt asylum at north weald. could wheelie their fazer on tap by the end of the day but then got on my own bike and couldn't do it lol. the anti flip things give you a false sense of security but they work. I want one on my fz1.
