Afternoon

I have it in my mind that there is an oil expert lurking somewhere on the forum.

I have a technical query about oil specs, the answer to which may end up costing somebody (possibly my company) a substantial sum of money, so if anyone can remember who this genius is, I would be grateful if they would let me know.

Oil is becoming VERY specialised these days. For example a lot of old vehicles use EP90 gear oil, the old spec is GL4 and the new is GL5. Unfortunately GL5 eats Bronze bushings in old gearboxes and diffs but most EP90 is obviously marked as to which it is.

If you go into Halfords they are now selling oil by car brand as the slightest difference in spec opens them up to litigation.

Oddly they also mark coolant system flush as to be added to coolant system and not the engine oil which is a bit scary.

It's a car related thing vaguely to do with the bit I've highlighted.

The potted version is, we service a fleet of around 150 vans, most of which use one spec of oil, some of them another.

We found a product which should do both, but a van has shat it's timing chain at 47K and the warranty claim is being rejected, because we didn't use the right spec oil.

The sucker punch is, the oil we use is at least as good as the oil recommended (as Weasley has pretty much confirmed) but they are getting all "That's not what we specify" about it, despite not being able to explain how the stuff we use might not work properly.

GL-5 is not an upgrade to GL-4; they co-exist. GL-5 is for rear axles and differentials whereas GL-4 is suitable for synchro gearboxes and transaxles.

I don't think there would be a need for all this manufacturer specified specific oils per brand and engine type if recommended oil change intervals were still sensible and realistic instead of being tailored to make fleet owners happy.

Regarding a van shitting out a cam chain at 47k. I reckon if oil change intervals were followed or exceeded, then it's going to be either a tensioner fault or a component failure due to poor quality or design IMO.

and diffs. GL-4 is recommended for Land Rovers and other classic vehicles.

I was always told GL-5 was the updated version, thank you for correcting this. It would seem it is a newer spec originating in the 60's but not a replacement.

20,000 is common now. Surely no connection with service packages being included in the sale? Thinking

Although I believe BMW (and Mini) dropped the recommended intervals on some models from 15,000 down to 10,000, possibly because dat gunk tho. Shocked

I generally change twice as often as recommended, using whatever 10W30 or 10W40 I happen to have to hand.

Anyone would think that they had a vested interests in cars getting beyond economic repair rather earlier in their lives.

I made a tidy sum on a long oil call back when it was about $27 a barrel, now it's up @ $50. You don't see oil prices that low very often and when it does, jump on in on a 4-6 month call and you're pretty much guaranteed it will be back up there.

Will be back up @ $70 - $80 a barrel before the end of the year.

It's almost like you didn't read any of the posts in this thread.

That said, why will oil go to $80? What do you know that others don't?

Where is the demand going to come from, or how is the supply going to dry up (particularly shale) and how do you know the FED will definitely cut interest rates?
