Just won a bike on ebay with no MOT.

It is obviously legal to ride to a pre-booked MOT.

My question is;

The chaps only available in the evening to collect, would I get away with riding it to the "MOT" in the evening and "leaving it at the garage" over night for a pre-booked MOT the day after?

How far away is the bike?

If you've got breakdown cover which covers you on any vehicle then what you could do is call them and say you've lost your keys, pls come and recover me and my bike.

Luckily you hadn't put the steering lock on and you've got a spare ignition key at home.

Its about 85 miles. 1 1/2 hour drive.

I do have breakdown on my policy which im hoping to add the new one too (theres under 4 weeks left to run).

There's a chance I could pick it up early Saturday but the local MOT stations are usually pretty booked up for weekends.

Anyone got a van? Laughing

"Winking" aside, do you actually mean book the MOT for Friday, ride it home on Thursday night, take it in for the MOT Friday morning?

Booked MOTs don't show up on Friend Computer (why not, sez I?) so it doesn't really offer you any protection from a personal tug. If you're ANPRd and anything ever comes in it... I'd agree with 50/50. I'd expect the CPS are likely to drop it if you put up a robust enough defence.

In practice, you're not going to get caught.

Yeah I thought about it after posting and figures there's no way if I got tugged they would be able to contact the garage and find out if it was booked in.

My plan was to either leave it over night at the mot station if after a quick check it looks like it would pass. And if it didn't look like it would pass without tinkering then just take it straight home (which I'd pass on the way to the station).

Let's see what mce insurance think about adding the bike to my policy...

Have a look in that policy. Is cover conditional on the bike having an MOT?

Most of us have 'inadvertentally' ridden without MOT which is easily done if it's not in sync with VED.

Trouble is if you had any sort of accident your insurance probably won't be valid, or at least they'll use it as a tool against you.
Technically you should trailer it home or book it for MOT and ride it to the appointment.
Your chosen station might be near your house, you aren't obliged to select the nearest possible place.

In practice only a saint would not just ride it home - carefully...

You are riding to a pre booked MOT appointment as you're going straight to the garage and leaving it there which is obviously the Gods honest truth officer Wink , you could in theory just ride around the country all night rather than parking it up and you'd still be in the clear.

I meant to ask how long has it been w/o an mot?

If it's been a few years then I'd give the bike a good looking over before you rode it.

85 miles on a bike you don't know is a bit of a gamble. If the bikes okay then the worst you'll get is a fine but since you've prebooked a mot then I'd say the chances are pretty low.

If it makes you feel any better my mate drove about unknowingly for 4 months w/o an mot on his car.

Bought sight unseen on eBay? No worries, mate, it'll sail through an MOT. It might even fly through.

I was advised by my insurer that no MOT = 10% reduction in payout on fire/theft, but still covered for 3rd party losses.

It ran out of mot last month.

I've asked the usual questions. Indicators look to be the main concern befo4e viewing as it looks like they are held on the front with lollipop sticks Eh?

It's a tatty k1 gsxr, intentions for track usage. As long as it purrs like a kitten I don't care if it looks like a dog Smile

I get that if it's intended as a track thrash it and crash it till it dies bike then cosmetics aren't a concern, but crappy bodge repairs would raise my eyebrows a smidge. I'd be wondering what else has been "repaired". Best of luck with it though. Thumbs Up

As long as it looks solid enough to get me home it's fine. I might stick it in to the mot how it is just to see how it fairs seeing as it's booked in. It'll be getting a strip down to inspect everything along with a service in the next week or two. Hoping to get to Snetterton on it at the end of the month for an evening Thumbs Up
