There's surely more to the story but on the whole it's hilarious.

I suppose you can't blame the parents. He's an adult and presumably just buggered off without them having any power to stop him. Must be tough really. I've not got kids myself but I wonder how I'd feel if my son went and did that. Easy to say I'd disown him but when there's all that parental love involved it's probably pretty hard to get things straight in your head.

He is a total knob for doing that though. Going from the information in the article, I get the impression he's doing it more as a peaceful ideological convert, rather than as an aggressive Jihadi John sort of bloke. Either way, fairly crazy, unless he did Arabic studies at SOAS and always planned to live in the middle-east even before it fell to places, in which case he's just using the war as a meal ticket Laughing

I think ISIS wages are quite good, one of the reasons they quickly attracted a big army of nutters.

Funnily enough the various Islamist psychos do generally pay their troops.

YPG will take foreign volunteers, they will arm/house/feed you but you don't get paid. Iraqi pesh take volunteers, but only with military experience, who probably get fed etc as the pesh is a conventional-ish military force. Some of the smaller Christian militias however..... you can fight for them but you need to pay for your own food/housing/ammo.
